250x/300ex differences
#1
Hello,
I have a quick question about the difference in a 250x and a 300ex. What will the addition of 50 or so cc's do as in power for climbing or top speed. A 300 is 282, and a 250 is only 229 so will I be able to feel a difference? If I will not notice a difference I will probable go w/ a warrior because I need reverse. For that reason only the 400ex is out of the question.
Thanks in advance. Steve

The 250X's are 249cc's not 229. The 250X's had a higher compression piston then the 300EX but the bore is the same. If you put a 250X piston in a 300EX you get more power and it's just as reliable as stock because it is a stock piston. The warrior has a little more power but it's not that noticeable.

I hear ya. For trail use, most people would choose the 300EX just for the fact that it has electric start while the 250X is kick-start only. Also, are you positive you need reverse? Is the quad going to see "dual purpose" use for yard work and stuff like that or is it strictly a "fun use" only quad. If its fun use only, you may not really need reverse. I ride down at Wayne all the time with 400EX's and they don't need reverse (at least not enough to step back down to a Warrior or 300EX or spend the $ to get a Raptor) and I sold my Raptor (which had reverse) to get my 250R which doesn't and I didn't think twice about not having reverse.

You can't put a 250X piston in a 300EX unless you are using the crankshaft from a 250X.
The 300EX's extra displacement comes from the crankshaft. While the cylinder bore is the same, the piston's will not interchange because the piston pin location is different to accomadate the longer stroke of the 300EX's crankshaft.
If you put the piston from a 250X into a 300EX, the piston would be 8.2mm from the top of the cylinder...talk about your low compression engines!!!!

Need4Speed,
Thanks, but this one was just another popular question that get asked from time to time at the store.
I was wondering if you couldn't help me out here.
A while back, there was a guy in here who had 400EX plastic and seat adapted to his 250X. I was wondering if you remember who he was.[Adam??]
I need to know if he kept the stock 250X steel fuel tank or if he adapted the plastic tank from a 400EX.
Thanks.

One question you should ask yourself is do you want a clutch. If yes you don't care go with the power you think you will need. The top speed of a 300ex is about 2 mph faster then the 250. The hill climbing and everything will be easier and you'll be able to feel the difference. Don't get a warrior!! They suck i rode one and i would take my old blaster over it. I just got a 400 it rocks. I dout you NEED reverse.
