<< Today a CR is close to 40 or 45. >>
add 10HP and your right on the money!
<< The CR500 engine hasn't changed since '86. Off the showroom floor you're looking at 65 hp regaurdless of any year after that. A CR250R making 55 hp is a little bit far fetched I think. Unless it's piped and has other engine work done. >>
it's been changed, trust me. a stock 250 puts out at the very very least 50HP, and slightly modded one has ~60HP. (pipe, silencer, ported, polished, milled)

Here are the REAL numbers. If you don't believe what you see, argue the point with Honda. Remember that these numbers are recorded at the wheel and not the crankshaft.
2000 CR125R.......32.1 HP
2000 CR250R.......44.7 HP
2000 CR500R.......55.0 HP

well you're likely right patrick, the announcer always say "these bikes are putting out 60+ hP" but that's when the pro's are racing. but my brothers CR was a pro's bike for only one-two moto's, after that weekend the guy needed money.........so my brother bought it. it has 60+ HP, almost too much...almost!

Ricky Carmichael's CR250R SX bike dynos at 56HP at the rear wheel. I don't remember the MX bike's HP, but it was a few more.
The HP for the 250s is actually what killed the 500 class. Once you get near 60HP, anything more is uncontrollable to even the best riders. The 250 is lighter and can be built to suit the rider easier than a 500 even if you are getting 500 class power from them.
Not to say that the CR500 can't be "built", but you just don't see the 90HP CR500s on a motocross track. Those are TT and Super motard bikes. [And for the duners ofcourse]

i agree, some people don't realize that there's such a thing as too much power! i feel more comfortable riding my XR than my brothers CR, but i'm not used to it now. i haven't seen a CR race in 2 years now! i think honda realizes this because the 500 is stuck in the late 80's
