This is for anyone who has experience with riding in (or I guess on) sand. Some friends of mine want to go to a place in Oklahoma (Little Sahara, I think?). What will a 4x4 quad with vampires do? Just did down and sink? The tires I see on atvs in sand seem to have paddles or tires like I am not used to seeing. Would I be better off switching out to my OEM tires and wheels first? Any comments are appreciated.

Hi,
My father in law brought his Arctic Cat BearCat 454 4x4 with stock tires to Little Sahara last spring. He did great with it. He was even jumping it! If he had a decent run, he could climb almost any dune.

I saw a Wolverine that was doing really well at Silver Lake. There were some other 4WDs there too. The Polaris's climbed every dune while the Hondas & Yamahas had some trouble with the tallest hills. The difference between 3WD & 4WD I guess.

I have rode on sand before, but that was before I put on my vampires. My friend with bear claws buried his quad in the sandy river while I with stockers got out. However I think the 4x4 with vampires will do much better than a 2x4 with vampires on the rear. With the front tires pulling it should keep the front and back tires from digging to much. I still say that sand riding is probably a lot more fun without mud tires. The are much harder to spin in the sand than in the mud. Our hunting lease filled in some mudholes with sand. After it dried we were riding in about 5th gear with my vampires, hit the dry sand and had to down shift to 3rd gear. It was a killer on momentum. I could just imagine what vampires would do in the desert.
