Rear sprocket
#1
I was thinking of reducing the rear sprocket in size. What do most of you do? Meaning, how many teeth do you reduce it to? How many is stock? My chain looks great, the indicater says its new, how do I tell if it is "o-ring" or "x-ring" or "whatever"? I will have to have the chain cut after right?

Stock gearing is 13 on the front and a 44 on the rear.
Gearing selection will depend on exactly what type of riding you do.
Larger on the front OR smaller on the rear for more top end.
Smaller on the front OR larger on the rear for more acceleration.
An O-ring chain and X-ring chain have rubber o-rings between the rollers and side plates on the chain.
Cutting requirements depends on the situation. Order your chain a bit longer than you need to begin with. Cutting a chain isn't a big deal at all.

Any local machine shop or anyone with power tools can cut your chain. Your dealer can also do this with a chain breaker, which is also available to you from most mail order companies.

So I have a 3:38 ratio? Is that anything like my rear`end of my suburban? If I go to a 40 say (in the rear) that would be a 3:07? OR should I go with a 36, which is a 2:76? Which do they make and where do I get them from??

You guys changing front and rear sprokets are just cancelling youself out. Why no just keep your case saver on leave the front 13T alone and change rear to 40T. This gives you a 3.07 Gear ratio(or 39T on rear makes a 3.00 gear ratio). With changing the front to 14T and removing case saver and changing rear to 42T you end up with a 3.00 gear ratio. Why buy two sprokets instead of one. May need to take a link out of your chain though. Still its gotta be cheaper.
Can you guys think of any downsides to leaving 13T on front and 40T(or 39T) on rear rather than 14T front and 42T rear????? Pretty much the same ratio.......
