I recently purchased a 1986 Honda 200SX that has lots of potential but will not start. The plug is wet but the spark is weak. The coil checked out ok
what else could it be??? Also what does the Stator do ???

Could be water in the fuel. Open the drain on the carb ( small screw on the bottom of the carb near a drain hose )and let some fuel drain with it turned on reserve. Now after that is done put in a new plug and open the throttle wide open with the kill switch in the off position and no choke and crank it over for a few seconds or a few pulls. this will clear it out. Then use full choke and 1/8 throttle and it should start right up. if not let us knowps, the stator is what generates the power for the headlight and spark. a good charge on the battery wont hurt either

you might want to check the CDI box also, i had a 200s 3wheeler and fried the CDI box some how, bought a new one and it worked. check the compression also.good luck.

Today i comparwd it with the spark on my Recon and the spark on the SX was very faint compared to the Recon.I even tried squirting fresh fuel in the spark plug hole and it would not fire.I also put my thumb over the spark plug hole and tried to crank it over and it blew my thumb right off,so it seems to have good compression.I wish i could find a CDI box to try???

the spark on my 200SX will knock me across the room! it probley is the coil after all as it is much harder to create a spark inside a compressed cylinder than it is outside the engine

i know this sounds funny but the spark plug cap will make it have a weak spark . remove the cap & purchase another one. it is cheap & easy to replace . that would be the cheapest thing to check first . let m us know how it turns out .

I finally got it started,It turned out to be a shorted ignition switch. After all of the work that i did to it (cleaned carb, adjusted valves)it really runs strong and idles smooth. When you turn on the key two things happen,12V goes to the ignition and the ground that shuts off the engine openes up.I checked it with my Ohm meter (Brown wire and blk\wht wire)and it would always stay closed,so i unhooked the return Blk\wht wire. And it started right up,the spark looked pretty impressive after that!!!
