the 400ex is way quicker about 5mph faster top end way faster in trails and basicailly does everything better than the scrambler except mud as long as the polaris 4-wheel drive is working.

I really don't think there is a comparison except speed. and the ex wins that. but the 400 is 2wd andthe 500 4. the 400 awsome mx bike 500 too heavy, the 500 good snow plow the 400 a good snow jumper. the 500 a mud runner adn the 400 not.
I bought a 400ex because i wanted it for mx,trailriding, and speed, and lightweight.
if i wanted a 4wd, peppyness, and utility i would have chosen the scrambler 500
just my two sence, a quad is only as good as what you want it for.

Speedy- real objective opinion!! Of course the 400ex is a much more true sport quad. However, Mud isnt the only thing the Scrambler does better. And my AWD has never failed me. Why does this post continue to come up? If you are objective and have ridden both you know that they both have their own positive attributes.

I can't sat that I've seen where the 400 is really that much faster. Unless it's a non HO 500. The 400 is obviously a better jumper & mxer, but the 500 is a better all around machine. It can do about everything good, where the 400 stops the 500 keeps going. Except jumping cars or something...

OK,
I DON'T have the H.O. Scrambler, but I own a 97 Scrambler 500...
Granted, in the "right" conditions.. the 400 would be a run-away..
In the real world, when it comes to climbing rocks, forging deep water, deep mud, climbing hills, running over trees that seem to get in the way, log-hopping, backing out of a mudhole that you can't get the rest of the way thru.. The Scramblers take it all the way..
As for tight trails, ya'll must have little elves working overtime to keep the trails that clean and rut free so you CAN do 60 MPH down them...
Here in North East Texas, top speed means absolutely NOTHING... (assorted 18" diameter pine trees kill that fun REALLY quick!!!)
Its all about acceleration... and THAT, I have PLENTY of... I've NEVER been outrun between the mudholes, usually, I have to let off, or just bash into them, and nail it and shove them up to speed... (I only do that to FRIENDS!!! hahahahaha)
Granted, me and Adam never lined up at Karnack, but he has the H.O. Scrambler, so he would most likely get me... So, for now, I can say I haven't been beaten between the mudholes..

mudmachine- we are not always talking about mudholes. And for you others, Polaris calls this quad the sport, so that is why they are being compared, i want to hear which is the best SPORT quad out there. Thanks for your posts!

Rangersx,
YOU are the one comparing the 400ex and the Scrambler series. What do you want your machine to do? What do you consider sport? I know you can not do the same heavy duty trail riding a Scrambler can do, yet he probably cant get around a mx-track as fast as you (although I did see a VERY good rider on a 400 2x4 beat 1 400ex and 2 LT 250 R's on a small track, but got beat by a Banshee!)
Anyhow,
Why are you going at the little fish when a new piranha has entered the waters? the DS-650 is going to rock the SPORT-HIGHPERFORMANCE quad world. I have done some checking on the motor which powers the DS-650. There are numerous mods available for this motor such as heads, cams, and, ummmm Electronic Fuel Injection!!
Then again, who owns a DS yet!
Should be an interesting millennium summer.

yes the DS is a good quad, they may be fast and have good suspension, but only a few of them are being produced. Few will make it to the mx track, some will and some will win. but right now no one has one so why compare? Polaris claims this is their sport quad, so why not compare them?
