Have you seen the new Rancher AT? If not go to http://preview.hondamotorcyles.com. I cannot determine if it has low range or not. I read somewhere that it has the 2nd generation Hondamatic but nothing about low range. What do you think of this new Quad? Does it have low range?

Looking at the picture, it sure looks like it. Because of the tpye of trans, I would think so. I hope so. I am also planning on buying one.

I doubt it. The Rubicon doesn't have low, and the transmission is of the same type (might even be identical???).

I would say no. Picture looks to me like two slots for the shift lever -one front and one back. You can always use the es. That might give you what you're looking for.

The Rubicon DOES have low range. Please don't comment if you don't know what you're talking about.

The RADICAL rancher will most likely have low range. It uses the exact same motor as the old 400, you can tell from the side view its got the same look as the Foreman. Why did they do this? That motor wasn't exactly a performer and all the new quads are fast and powerfull on the low end and the top end. The RADICAL rancher will only have low end power like the Foreman.

The spec sheet does not list it? I would think it would though.

Bisley-I have to admit I havn't looked at a Rubicon lately, but are you saying it has a transfer case and a reduction gear in the classical sense?? I don't think so?? The "low range" (I can't remember what they call it, D1 and D2??) is only an electronic thing, not a real gearing change. There is no reduction gearing in this oil pumping transmission. In fact, Honda has (very wisely) avoided transfer cases in all their models, obviously to keep weight down.

As I recall, don't the "low and high ranges" actually change the ignition mapping of the engine (nothing to do with the transmission)???? One favoring torque, and the other top end speed??? Someone who knows, please set us straight here!!

The rancher AT and the old 400 are not the same engine. If you look at the specs of both.Rancher 397cc/bore 85 and stroke70.Forman 400 is 395cc/bore 86 and stroke 68.

The rubicon has a low range the D1 and D2 and esp are on a rotating **** on the dash so to speak. The shift **** has a low high netural and reverse. Now is it a reduction or a reprograming of the trany I do not know but either way it does lower the final drive ratio so it is a true and honest low range and does make a big difference.
