Hi there thanks for reading the post one of my friends is looking ata 250r and i was wondering about these machine this machine is totaly restored from ground up it looks like it should come off the show room floor powder coated frame and some type of arms i cant really remeber but they are aftermarket and it has a after market exhuast dont know which one it is, oh yeah brand new white plastic twist throttle turf tamers on the rear and hmmm this quad is just and awesome looking machine. My friend is not a racer or anything he rides trails and im sure a few motocross tracks hear and there what type of trail bike is it going to be like im assuming it is stock except for the exhaust is it going to have bottom end no bottom will it have to be run all or nothing like the banshee that i hear about. And this will be the first 2 stroke he has ridden besides a blaster and he has rode a warrior befor what do i have to watch out for on this machine and will it be rider friendly. And whats the reliablity factor on this machine. Oh yeah almost forgot about the 440 ex that he was looking at would this be a better quad its a 2000 440ex with a little bit less after market parts. Thanks for your time

have to find out if the cylinders been ported. some are drag ported and would be banshee like. hopefully hes good at reading plugs and changing jets. thats the big one with the r. the wires and connections are probably old and have corrosion. could make jetting tricky. the r is probably the better machine definetaly can be made faster. the 400ex has no oil to premix but wheres the speed. the r is good in trails and track and dragging. look that powder coated frame over real good. for cracks.

I love my R as a trail machine. It's an 86 with a stock motor and carb with an FMF Fatty pipe and Turbine Core II silencer. Not a lot of bottom end (obviously) but it is smoother with more midrange than a Banshee. I ride agressively and love the power characteristics when compared to the Raptor I had.

The 250r will hold it's value quite well. Although I think now it takes a little longer to sell them because of all the new sport quads that are available. The price of 250r's have come down over the past two years. I just sold mine for $5600 but it had loads of extras. My opinion is, why spend $5600 for a 14 year old machine when you can purchase a brand new 400ex,Z400, or other. I bought a used Cannondale Speed for $5950 and it's in new condition. My 250r had nothing on my Speed but a little bit of a handling advantage. I like the power spread on my Speed better though. I personally think four strokes make for a better trail machine then a two stroke quad. Just my .02 pennies.

The R's sell now for more than what they sold new for. What other quad can say that!! That should answer your resale question. As far as this particular R your friend is looking at, too many questions need to be answered. How stock is the motor, been ported, been recently rebuilt including a new Honda crank, counter balancer been rebuilt, clutch and clutch basket. Does it have stock ignition? If you could send pics that would help. You also haven't mentioned what the person is asking for the quad. What aftermarket parts are on the quad, axle, swingarm, a-arms, shocks. All this makes a big difference in price. For instance, maybe it has PEP/ZPS shocks on it, those alone cost over $1700 if it also has the rear shock.
Keep in mind, the R is probably the best quad ever built, it only weighs 328 pounds!! Everyone has copied it's frame geometry, why, because Honda got it right, it handles like a dream. You cannot go wrong buying an R but you have to educate yourself, they are getting old!
