i dont have experience with it, but i can tell you a little bit about it....it's basically the ancestor of the 250ex, which is what i have. i still see them once in a while around here.for a ten year old, i'd imagine that this would be the perfect machine for him. while it is somewhat slower than a 250ex, there is still room to grow. if i were you, i wouldn't pass on that kind of deal, as mint or near-mint quads that are that old still go for a good bit of money.how much is the asking price?

First of all, the 200SX doesn't have the initial accelaration of the 250EX, BUT is faster on the top end if it still has the stock gearing and tire height.
Things to look for on any of the 200SX models are signs of chain derailment. It is way too easy to get the rear axle out of lign when adjusting it and every time the chain comes off, it busts the engine case. There is minimal room there. I haven't seen one that didn't have JB Weld on it in quite some time.
Other than that, the 200SX is a good quad. The cylinder and head are directly from a 1986-1987 ATC200X, and that's why it has more power than what people think. These also had 5 speed transmissions. The TRX200 models from 1990-1997 had the same engine but the early ones had a 4 speed tranny and the later ones used a different camshaft grind and was a good deal slower.
Prices here in the U.S. for an SX in good shape range from $800-$1000....so I think one in excellent condition is well worth $1300.

I still have mine that I bought back in highschool 1992 for $600.00. I have run the holy **** out of mine, It has been my daily driver until i bought my rubicon last year!! It even hung with my friends 400EX (floored at 53MPH on sled trails) had the rear axle come loose and the chain fall off (never busted my case thank god) after i missed a corrner on a sled trail and went over a cliff rolling the quad about 10 times and bending the handlebarrs down across the gas tank! The quad is indrestuctable and it is a very awesome buy! A hard shift into second up hill will bring the front end up! Its a little rough ridding for todays standards but it will still hang with my rubicon on top end! I have a few videos of crazy high revving gear smashing events still hangin around. The thing holds darn near 2 quarts of oil, and still doesnt burn a drop!!!
