The 400EX and the XR400
Is it the same motor? If not, how similar is it?
I would assume thay are very similar. So could you maby take the kick start off a XR and put it on a EX??

I was wandering the smae thing. I think the engines are almost excacly the same except the xr400 has a kickstart. I would much rather have a kick start and lose 20-30lbs

They modified some stuff.

The gears are thicker, the cam is different, they molded new cases (which prevents the easy addition of a kick starter), and I believe they lowered the compression.

The lower compression is a result of a thicker head gasket. You can install a factory xr400 gasket to get it back.
