Default Rubicon D1 or D2?

I have been riding my 01 Honda Rubicon in Livingston Ky and wonder about the D1/D2 settings, I have been using D1 and it seems to do just fine, I ride in Mud/Hills/Creeks and rocks I never really get over 15 miles an hour and shift down into low alot before going in the mud, Should I be useing D1 or D2?

I would recommend that you use D2 mainly in flat open trail areas, but I use it with my 27" Claws and have no problems even on hill climbs. You are doing the right thing by using low when in the mud and also on steep hills. You can use D1 or D2 on most terrain, I use D1 if I will be on fairly step hills for a long while but have had no tranny problems in 2,750 miles in 16 months and should not for a long time. Use whichever mode you want to because that what everbody else does, good luck.

I do shift from low to high and back to low all the time. I do not think this is recommended but I have had no trouble yet, I would not shift between gear ranges going over 15-20 mph because I don't want to try and tear anything up.

I personally use D1 mostly and flirt a little with ESP and haven't had any trouble at all with the transmission. At another forum though some people indicated that they are burning clutches if they use D2 unless the trail is very easy and flat. Some dealers are also telling owners not to use D2.

I was wondering what experiences the rest of you may have had here. Are any of your dealers telling you not to use D2?

You should NEVER shift between high and low while moving. Your subtransmission will not last.

Why does everybody blame D2 for clutches getting burt up. If you use the modes how they are sopposed to used you should have no trouble. D2 is an overdrive, so use it like one don't go mudding while in that mode and don't try to climb steep hills with it. Texmud I only shift between ranges because I do not hear and wierd noises coming from the bike when I do it. When I an in low I go up to 15 mph and let off the gas and then shift to high, when in high I drop down to about 10 mph and then drop it in low while I have let off the gas. I know this is not recommended but I will do this until I have problems. When that happens I will be looking for a new one anyways.

I did get my clutch hot while triing to pull a 60' tree out of the ground in low range with 4 people on the quad for weight, the bike just smoked them on the pavement. The Sub trans is seperate for the hondamatic, and if i try to change ranges on the move i get some nasty clunk's going on

There is no "gear box". The Hondamatic unit is what drives the quad. The sub-transmission is what controls what range you are in...high, low, reverse, nuetral.
