Hey Chet.

I think the small bore XR with dual carbs that you are thinking about was the '84-'85 XR200R bikes. Honda made two versions both years. One was a RFVC dual carb engine and the other had a larger bore XR[XL]185 engine with a single carb.

Hey Knowsalot,

Great to see you back.

Thanks for making my night. I knew at some point there was a smaller than the 250 that had the dual carb set up.

It just takes a knowsalot

Thanks again,

Chet

We finally took this bike for its 1st ride!!!

Ran like a champ.

Three different people riding it,,,,(you know how it goes),,,,it took a beating, and you cant even notice.

A strong runner!

Thanks for the help!

You need to post a picture of the 185 for a short on your photo page.

The 185 has alot of good things going for it. The 200x 85 and back are about the same top end. You can use a 200x piston, cam and carb on it. Stock is 63mm bore you can go with the stock sleeve up to 67mm. Compression do not go over 12:1. I used the 13.5:1 in mine and keep breaking the kick starter gear. If you can find a XR185 motor they have a six speed in them.

Ahh! yes, a topic that contains bikes i used to own! the good old XL/XR 185 engine is pretty much the same engine in todays XR200R! the points are inside the small cover on the head, only the 100cc and below engines had it hideing behind the flywheel... thank god!
Dual carbs that opend one carb first then the second would open as the first reached half throttle to give both max torque and HP were used on the first RFVC ( sames as the 400EX engine ) engines they are the following bikes:
84'&85 XR200,250,350
83'-85 XR500R ( the first born Radial Four Valve Comustion engine, same as the 400EX )
These bikes ran hard, but the 84 and 85 XR200 and 250 had to soft valve springs and it floated the valves so hard the engine would litterly explode and shoot the valves out the exahust pipe when run hard! Seen it happen myself and there is a issue of dirt bike mag showing picts!
Your 185 has a weak kickstart gear, but otherwise bulletproof as long as you keep the oil full because there are no cam berrings...
have fun, this was a blast from the past!

put some new rubber on Herbs 185 today,,,,what a difference

changed the oil

valves,,,,,intake was loose,,,,,exhaust was tight,,

What can you guys tell me about the stock rear shocks? They really suck,,,,and do a lot of clunking around.

kickstarter is showing signs of age,,,,,,,,as well as the neutral/1st shift

still running strong though

That's great you got it running and as far as the shocks does it have one of the first slant mounting points before they went to the single shock linkage?
