Dont give him that much, make an offer of like 1500 or less. As for hopping it up, dont bother, add the money to how much you have now and just get a quad with more potential. It would be like buying an old volkswagen beetle then putting 10 grand into it instead of buying a 90s mustang or Z28 with the same amount of money.

The 250X is a nice machine, of course whether it would suit you depends on what type of riding you're going to do and what size you are. It is the perfect quad for my 15 year old. He weighs about 130 and he hangs with me on about any trail. He rides wheelies half way down the drag strip and gets some pretty good air with it on the MX track. It's a nice reliable quad, easy to maintain, and great for trails and occasional jumps. If you're a big guy and want to drag race or do alot of jumping then I'd pass. If you're concerned about the power of the 250X don't think you're going to find alot more with a 300EX. Actually I think the compression in the 250X is a little higher than the 300EX. They're both nice quads though. I'd say $2500 is on the high side though. You say it's 85% so I'm not sure what you mean by that exactly. I'd check the frame for cracks, look under the seat too for frame cracks. Check for slop in the rear axle carrier too, that could run a few hundred to fix if it happened to be bad enough. Just take it for a ride and listen to it. Sounds like it's in good shape though.

scosho: This owner is pretty proud of his '91, asking $2500... I think he is $1K too high on price, I should be able to get a much newer 300ex with mods for his asking price. Does that sound right?... Guess I really want a clean 400ex to fall in my lap for cheap as they become less state-of-the-art.
mr350x: ...you wont find a 300EX in decent shape for $2500. (at least not in my area!! san diego)
2500 is high, but if it is in great shape, that is the going price
I know this is Mississippi and you're in Colorado, but I have seen good used 400EX's in the $2,500 range. And in one of our used classifieds here I have seen several 300EX's around that price.
My point is, if you look hard enough and are willing to travel a little, you might can get one for a very good price.

I was able to talk a dealer down to 3100 on a 99 300ex, it was almost spotless, not even any scratches on the frame underneath, if someone gave me a 2500 price on a 250x that wasn't 100% perfect, I'd have a hard time keeping a straight face and not laughing. He is at least 1k over book, if he feels his mods and such make it worth that much, you will have a hard time talking him down. A 300ex can be had for that price, and you will have electric start on top of it.

before my 400EX I had a 250X, which is basically the same thing as a 300.....
and I loved it.... I had 20" Scorpions on the rear, and 21" somethings (lol) on the front... but man it handled sooooooooo good....
it was more stable than my 400 because of the low center of gravity....
I gutted out the stock silencer, and put a K&N and jet kit on..... it was a noticable difference.... I had a lot of fun on that quad

I have noticed that atv's on the east coast are much cheaper than here on the west coast. 300ex's on average sell for $3200 and 250x are are selling for around $2200. I live in california, and even nevada has fairly low prices. The market is just really high here I guess. I did however pic up a very nice and very stock 250x for $1400. I bought it the same day the ad came out and the guy I bought it from said close to ten people called that day, but I got to it first. It also came with a new set of plastics still in the packaging. If I wanted to, I just need to put the new plastics on, give it a good detail cleaning and I could sell it here for close to $2200. So that 91 250x that was previously mentioned for $2500, would be going rate here. If you can get a 300ex for $2500, BUY IT.

I have a 250X motor in a Suzuki 230 Quadsport frame and I like it. I am 6'2" and about 160 pounds and it moves along great with me on it. My buddy is the same height and weighs about 250 and it still moves good with him on it. I find the motor has enough power for trail riding and the odd little bit of playing. It climbs the hills in the quarry just great so I am pretty happy with it. I am used to it now and I would love to have some more power but I only paid $500CDN bucks for it so I guess I can't complain.
