I used a Houser, and it went together real well. The two major problems are getting an airboot, and getting a pipe to fit. I just let Jeff Houser fit my stock crf exhaust to fit the quad and it worked fine. The most costly items will be the 250R parts you will need the seat, airbox, and plastic. I used Maier plastic and bought a new seat and airbox from servicehonda.com. The seat is about $170.00 and was backordered for about 2 wks. and the airbox was in stock but cost over $70. Another important item is the radiator you really should get a crossflow radiator Atv Innovations has one for $450, if you run the stock 250R radiator you could overheat easier because 4 strokes run hotter than 2 strokes.
If you use a Houser frame you will have to run his swingarm, but you can use a different front end. Also, you will need the engine bracket for the cylinder off a crf, but the front crankcase mounts Houser provides with the frame as well as a specially made pivot bolt. The other parts off the crf you will need are all the electricals, carb, brake pedal and master cylinder.
You can get a cable to convert your crf carb to run with a 400EX thumb throttle from Terry Cable. I am sure there is more to it than I can remember, but basically I spent more time waiting on parts than working on the bike. I think if you are mechanically inclined it will take 40 hours or less.

I don't have any experience with them but over on exriders.com John Arens from ArensBros said he is making a new 400ex frame that is going to be much stronger and lighter than the stock 400ex frame. He also is going to sell the same frame with motor mounts to fit the crf450r motor. I guess most aftermarket frames cost about $2500 but Arens says he guarantees his is just as good and will be selling it for $1200 or $2500 for a rolling chasis that includes +2 a-arms, steering stem, frame, sub-frame and swing-arm. He said if you use the crf motor it requires a different swing-arm but other than that all OEM 400ex parts will bolt right up to it. I think the frame will be ready this spring/summer some time.

I went with Lonestar Racing, and they basically had a great setup for the 426 already. So the CRF was almost a no brainer for those guys. They make a 250R and 400EX chassis for the CRF motor. I am completely satisfied with their chassis and everything else they make is also on my quad .
