adjusting valves
#1
i have a 400ex and the valves need adjusted. my question is, with a pipe, filter, and jetting do the valves need adjusted different than stock specs. or does it just matter when you have a cam and other motor work? thanks for the help

Its easiest if you plug the pipe with your hand when it is running if you here alot lf clatter then they need to be adjusted. to adjust them get at the top lf the motor and then pull your plugs out of the top of your head (4) then take your feeler gauge and slip between the rocker arm and the valve. you just want it to drag slightly. then throw it back together and test it. its alot easier than it sounds

well i checked my valves after the dealer adjusted them just to see how it all worked and i noticed they seem tight to me. i can barely wedge the feeler guage in between the rocker arm and the sub rocker arm. it was at top dead center. this maybe how their suppossed to be but i don't know. i thought the feeler guage would be a little looser in there but it is a really tight fit. is this the way it should be? thanks

The valves on my '96 Fourtrax have been adjusted by the dealer at first oil change, then again after about another 50 hours, again at about 150 hours, and one last time at 500 hours. I have 750 hours on it now, and they still don't clatter.
