Help - 87 250X
#1
I can't figure this out! Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. My 250X seems to run strong, except if I shift into 3rd gear without revving out 2nd gear, it will bog and with the throttle fully open, will not pick up any speed at all, just stay at the same speed. I know most quads will bog a little if shifted into the next gear early, but I thought most will slowly pick up speed? My quad won't pick up any speed at all if I shift into 3rd without revving out 2nd. Does the motor not have enough TQ or HP to generate speed? Or does this sound like a carbeurator problem?
Thanks for any feedback!

The engine doesn't know what gear the transmission is in. Does it bog out even worse if you shift into 4th gear? If so then I'm willing to be that your clutch is toast. The higher gear that you run the more load it puts on the tranny and your clutch is what would slip if the plates are toast. It wouldn't hurt anything to give the ole girl a tune up.

Is your choke on? It may sound stupid but one time on my 300 i was going down to my friends house and when i shifted into 3rd it would bog. I just warked it up and thought i put the choke back over but I didn;t do it all the way. Check that. It may be that simple. Or as need4speed said, you clutch could be gone.

Thanks fellas for the feedback!
Need4spd- Wouldn't the rpm's go up if the clutch was slipping? The rpm's don't go up when it bogs. It will hold the speed that I shifted up at, but with the throttle fully open, it won't gain any speed or loose any speed, and this was on a flat "smooth as ice" DRY lake bed in the so. cal. desert at about 2500 ft. elevation.
Jay- No, the choke was in the full off position, unless it needs to be adjusted?
JTR- The filter is brand new, so that shouldn't be clogged.
I just bought the quad last month, it's completely bone stock except for the rims and tires, I just put on bandits on all 4 corners, but it had the problem with the OEM tires before I went with bandits, so I have ruled out a tire weight problem. I changed the oil twice, new oil filter, and air filter, and gave it a detailed cleaning. It runs great except for the bog problem. Is there a fuel filter on my 250X?
Any suggestions?

i would suggest taking out your carb cleaning it up and taking a good look at it. i had a very similiar problem with my blaster.. i dont know if there is much diff between the 2 but i took out my carb and found some mud type stuff stuck in there cleaned it out and it worked great. The only thing i can see yoru probelm being is a carb. not clutch because yes you would get higher rpm's.

It sounds carb related to me from the description,Does it run fine at lower rpm's and kinda sit there and stumble when you gas it.....say 1/2 to 3/4 to full throttle?if so it probably the needle jet or the main jet clogged w/ crud, also could even be the kill switch shorting out, happened to me last week, ran great till 3/4 to wfo, went thru the carb 3 times and just before loading up I unhooked the kill-switch,BAM it came unglued again, really could be anything ignition/carb related but start w/ the simple stuff first, you say the filters new,is it WAY over-lubed?I dont mean to run off at the lips but Ive seen it all, lol, good luck to you!!!

UPDATE
Thanks for the feedback guys! I went riding up in the Cajon Pass area, CA on sunday to ride up to the snow level and in all the mud..........damn that was fun! Anyway, kept having the same bogging problem, and finally decided to pull the air box lid...........RAN STRONG AFTER THAT, although it was loud and had a lot of resonance. I understand, since I was riding at elevations ranging from 3500 ft. to 5000 ft., that the motor is going to be striving for air more so than at sea level. My problem is probably a combination of the carb. needing to be rebuilt and my filter being over oiled or something else restricting air flow.......sugestions? I have to rebuild the carbuerator, get that dialed in, and hopefully get a K&N air filter, would a K&N help or is it a waste of $30?
Oh yeah, my new Bandits worked AWESOME! 23" XCR's up front and 22" bandits in the rear!
