another 400ex jetting question!

Can you get to the needle jet via the main jet access on the bottom of the carb? If not where abouts is it located.
PS they might as well not even sent directions with the jet kit, the only thing they show you is where the fuel mixture screw is!
Thanks!

Jeaner,
You have to remove the top of the carb, the slip the slide out which contains the needle

Well i failed to get to the needle. i could not back the carb out far enough from under the gas tank to get the top off. i did up the main to 165 and it really helped it pull very hard in any gearif you wanted to punch the throttle.

When you TRY to get to the needle, there are two VERY small screws that hold the needle in place. The heads to these screws take a phillips-head screwdriver to remove them. They almost always strip out. Be sure to use the right size screwdriver and use LOTS of pressure. Also, don't waste your money buying the Dynojet carb kit. There is no real difference in performance. You would be better off jumping up your pilot jet one size, adjusting your air/fuel mixture screw, open up your airbox (read: remove the lid and save it for winter and extemely wet riding), and changing your main jet. You will need to go up to about a 160-170 without the lid depending on elevation or you will need about a 150-155 main jet with the above modifications with the lid on. You can also raise your needle with a super small washer (like the one found on points) or change the setting of the e-clip to the 4th notch (counting from the top down as the needle points down). This will help accelleration a little but the change may not be worth the pain involved in getting to the needle. These mods will definetly work on a 2000 model, since the stock main jet is a 148. I am not sure the exact main jet is required for a 1999 model because the stock main is a 140. Now you have the info-----Good Luck!
