Default Recon mods

Just bought a 2003 Recon for my wife, does anyone know what to do to get more punch out of it, is rejetting the answer, I hear they come lean from the factory, Will a aftermarket pipe make a difference or is it all a waste of money, who makes the best air filter, I see K&N makes a jet and air kit for the recon. Has anyone made this mods, sorry for all the questions, thanks Mike

Yes the recons do come a little lean from the factory. A popular setup for them is the supertrap complete exhaust systemwith K&N filter and jet kit. I don't have these mods YET, but I plan to get it in the summer. From what I have heard it is suppose to give it quite a boost. Also you can open up the hole at the end of the snorkle for more air flow but you willl have to rejet afterwards.
The other mods for the recon are a pro circuit exhaust, fmf exhaust, uni air filter, twinair filter. I haven't heard how these work as much as the one i mentioned above. Also there is a high compression piston kit for the 250ex, but I have heard mixed results about if it works on the recon.

Thanks redrecon, it seems like the K&N is the way to go, I think they make the jet kit and air filter for it in a kit, I might try it out, otherwise I love the Recon can't beat the price compaired to other atv's, I was also thinking about trying to run a 25" tire on it to give it more height, any comments???????

Bad idea Dude. Since the Recon is shaft drive there is no way you can re-gear it to make up for the loss of power that that tall of a tire will certainly cause. I don't think a 25" tire would fit anyway.

We have a 2000 with a Supertrapp, Uni filter, and the airtube mod done. If you do do the airtube mod the K&N kit probably won't have a jet big enough so I'd just get the filter.

Hope this helps,

Yes, I think it's worth it. Not only do you get increased performance but weight savings and better looks too.
The airtube mod is very simple. Just cut the end off the plastic tube that runs from the airbox up under the gas tank. This leans it out BIGTIME so you'll need a jet before you do the mod. I went to a 110.

We put on a K&N and FMF MegaMaxII, and the power increase was noticeable!! Strip off the racks if you don't need them, and lighten the bike up.

I think there is a common thread here that I see in a lot of posts. People want a smallish bike like the Recon, but are also hungry for more power. Anybody from Honda out there listening???????????????

You're welcome skatermike24!

I have both K&N and Uni filters and like them both. The K&N is easier to clean/oil but costs about twice as much. I guess it boils down to how much you want to spend. They are both good filters so whichever you choose just be sure to clean/oil it often.

some other mods you can do to pep it up a lil is to go 1 " diameter hole sin the air box and put inserts in. they sell them at most atv stores and in dennis kirk. i wouldn't go bigger then a 24" tire on back. even that is pushing it. i would take a good look through dennis kirk catalog and see what they have. they have good prices. and also, take a look at high lifter's products. they specialize in utility atvs and may have some performance parts as well as a lift kit.
