Help!! When I start this bike cold, I hear a LOUD intermittent ticking on top of the engine. I can feel the ticking in the thumb throttle. It goes away and the bike runs great. I checked all of the valve clearences hoping that was the problem, no luck. Valves were in spec. Any help would be appreciated!!

Yeah, I too first thought it was not normal. My First RFVC in my 91' XR250 would make a soft tick, then get louder and louder for about 10 seconds, then totally go away. If this is the same as your noise it is just because it takes a while for the oil to reach the valve train. If the Loud tick dosent go away withen 20 seconds you may have a problem.

Mine does it also. Alway when cold and usually when the idle drops just before it dies. Once it is warm, for the rest of the day I don't hear it.

Hope someone out there can tell us what it is. My XL350 and XR350 never did this.

Any XR 400 owners out there with this noise?

Why do you come in here and say your yamaha is better than a honda. honda has the best trail bike of all time and you come in here and act like your yamahas the best. BTW i dont own a honda but im sone to own another yamaha.

Mud,
Does the ticking go away when you turn off the choke lever?
Mine only does what you describe when the choke is on.

About the choke, for you who don't know. The owners manual says to leave the bike in full choke position as little as possible because extended time will do harm to the motor. I only leave it at full choke for a few seconds and them move it to half choke and do my warm up there.

Cant we all just admit that balzie33 has the best bike ever? sure we can when he gets a HONDA. I use yamahas for traction.
