Default start in gear?

Is there anyway to make a 03 450s have the ability to start in gear without creating problems?

Default start in gear?

Should be! just find the neatural wire that runs down to the bottom of engine (dont cut it) then connect a wire to it run it to a toggle switch then form the other side of the switch run a wire to ground , when you flip the swith you should have neatural light in any gear and it will start, just make sure to flip it back off as soon as you get started because starter will work anytime the neatural light is on . hope this helps

Can also use this method for drift or towe starting

Agree with Hilltopat. But be CAREFUL, when the choke's on that thing will take right off and go, if your switch is in the wrong postion. Oh yeah, Honda's neutral wire color is light green\red.

If it was an ES, it might not work. The shift program might get confused and start flashing, the newer ones may spit out an error code. I'd try it on the S model with a jumper wire first, before you take the time to do all the hardwiring. Somebody on this forum may have tried it already. Why don't you wait for a few more replys.

Default start in gear?

Well, I tried it on an '03 450ES, and it does work... However, whatever gear you are in when you started it, it stays in that gear. Kind of like if you ever had to use the manual shifter in the tool kit, it's just there to get you going. The start in gear mod will only get you started in gear, once started it will not let you shift to any other gear. You have to turn off your quad, turn it back on and hit your shift buttons (ES model of course) until you are in neutral. Then once you are in neutral, you can start the quad and everything will work fine. I guess this is because of the computer controlled ES, once that thing is out of gear, you have to reset the computer by turning your quad off/on, this resets it. I guess this mod is really only good if you are stuck in a tight situation and you stall in a low gear (1,2 or 3). If you can't rock your quad back and forth to get back in neutral to start it, this mod will work. But again, if you are in a low gear, you can get out of most situations, and you'll have to ride out in that gear. Then once you are at a safe point, reset the computer so that you can resume to normal riding. I'm not sure if this applies to the "S" model, since the shifting is done manually. Hope this helps anyone...
PS. I love this quad, but my next one will be an "S" model!
