2002 Honda Recon Warm Idle Problem
#1
I have a problem with my Recon. After the first service at the dealer the following happens:
It will crank and warm up normal. It will run at speed fine, but after letting off the throttle when at operating temperature it will not idle. The engine dies. Usually I have to wait 20-30 seconds or so before it will restart and idle normal. I don't necessarily have to be running fast, more of a problem after running under a load...like climbing a hill or riding slow through the woods.
This problem has gotten worse and worse as the weather warms. When it was in the 30's and 40's no problems. In the mid-60's some problems, and now in the 80's it does it non-stop.
Any ideas? Is this something I can fix myself? New to ATV's so I need step by step help.
Thanks!

No chance that it could be something I could fix, like adjusting the pilot screw, running too lean in warm weather? I just hate to have to go back to the dealer because it is such a pain in the rear to get it over to them.

What Harw says is a possibility, but it sounds more like a fuel related problem. Colder weather requires richer jetting. So it sounds like yours might be rich. It's possible your choke is hanging up a bit or the cable is sticking and you should first eliminate that possibility. You could try adjusting your mix screw, get it fully warmed up and allow to idle. Turn mix screw to get the highest idle, while adjusting the idle speed. turning the mix screw in leans the mixture, you should probably end up 2.5 to 3.5 turns out. You may want to call the dealership and ask them if they did any carb adjustment. On many of the first year Recons, I richened the needle one slot (moved the clip down) in order to get them to run better at low speed , and to improve the idle. I haven't found it necessary to do it on any suqsequent model years though.

How long has it been since the first service? You really should take it back and make them fix it. As soon as you touch it, then you did it and not them.

It has been about a month. I have only ridden it twice since then, both times I noticed the problem. The dealer thinks I should just "live" with it until the next service is due. I have a funny feeling they are going to try to get out of doing anything for free...have a feeling they will call it a "tune-up" and try and charge me again.
I will take it in this Friday and see what they say. I just don't want to have to pay for anything after paying over $100 for the "first service."
