Default drilling out 400ex carb

has anyone done the factory carb modification. i believe sparks and other companies do this mod if you send in your carb. however, i know this can be done by yourself that way you don't have to pay $125+. i guess you have to drill out these fins from what i have been told. i don't know what these fins look like. i do know it is behind the choke. any help would be great. thanks

You remove the choke, and grind out the fins that were next to it, giving a smooth transition on the carb. There is a hole that will be left if you do this, so most guys put vaccuum cap, or some other kind of seal on there to keep crud from being sucked into your carb. Go to the FAQ section on exriders.com, there is a step-by-step set of instructions to do what you want.

To make up for having no choke, you will need to bump up your pilot jet to at least a 42.

Good Luck!!!

yeah, another problem is starting the bike. i already have a 42 in place and it did not help. bike is stock with a modded airbox lid and a gutted factory pipe. are these fins right behind the internal part of the choke you will be removing? also to be sure i will be grinding out the right "fins," are these a darker color than the rest of the metal in the carb or are they the same color? thanks

Like I said...go to exriders.com and look at the FAQ section. There are pictures and every bit of info you need to do the job.

Why sacrafice the reliability and easy starting for an extra HP.
Its just not worth it IMO.

yes it does get cold here. however, i am just trying to figure out how many people are starting their bikes without a. many people can start their bike quicker without the choke in with a 42 pilot jet than when the bike was new and the choke was still in the carb.

ok guys, i have one more quick question here. i figured out the pilot jet so now my bikes starts quicker without the choke on than it used to with the choke. i took everything apart and looked behind the choke and there is a little bronze/goldish color rod. do you grind this out too? also, how far, depth wise, do you grind out? i think i know what your talking about when you say fins, there is like a hump in the carb that i am assuming your talking about. but, did you drill all the way to the dark metal piece that slided up and down when you hit the throttle? or did you stop before that point? thanks
