Are you content with your 300ex?
Hey,
ive been searching for a while for a decently priced sport quad. my riding buddies in the 400/500 Scramblers, a Predetor, a 300/400ex, and occasionally a raptor.
i'd love to find an old 250r or quadracer lt250r. but they don't seem to exist in good condition in my price range of around $1500. and 400ex's are still out of my range also.
but i do occasionally see something like a '94 300ex in good shape for $1500. so i'm starting to think that this is what i should get. but my question is, will i be happy or get bored quickly? compared to my riding buddies, i'm the slowest in the group. plus my whole reason for getting a quad (over an old Jeep CJ) is to go fast. riding will mostly the woods with some long open areas.
so to you guys riding 300ex's, are you happy with your quad? i mean, even though you may not be the fastest in your group, are there still reasons you're content with your quad?
also, would you say it's worth it to put money into the 300ex (pipe, air filter, jet kit, etc)? or should i just enjoy riding it and develop some basic skills while i save my $$ for a faster quad?
happy trails,
bigmac
PS: any concerns about buying an older 300ex?

One of my friends that rides with us has a 96 300ex. He has put a pipe and all the other essential bolt ons into the quad, and he is very happy. He would rather have a bigger, faster machine, but he doesnt get upset with the performance he has. He can usually keep up in the local trails, most trails dont allow terribly high speeds anyway. They are very hearty machines for the most part. I do remeber that there was a widespread problem with them though. I believe it was the transmission, but I am not sure. My friends had a different tranny in it when he got it, so we havent had any experience with the stocker.

I have a 2000 300EX. My mods are : DG front bumper and chassis skid, OMF swingarm skid, shockwears, renthal handlebars, LSR Pb blockoff plate, renthal 14t front sprocket, 87' 250X ignition holder, 400EX a-arms, 400ex tie rods, Works Triple rate shocks w/ ELKA springs, 01' Raptor rear shock w/ 400ex spring, No Choke/42 Pilot Jet, Razrs all around
The 300 can do anything the 400 can, I can beat some of my buddies on their 400 with my 300 on the trails. If you get the 300ex, get some nice suspension for it and you'll love it. I got 400ex a-arms for mine, and i have custom built works shocks that are 14 3/4 inches from eye to eye, they work great. Ive never had any major problems with my 300ex

I am very happy with mine. I have other quads for when I want a little more power, but I ride the 300 more than the other ones. Why? Because the 300EX is great in the woods and can keep up with everybody else for the most part and they are reliable. I have several mods on mine:
White Brothers E-Series exhaust; Dynojet carb kit; K&N filter and Outerwears airbox cover; IMS 3.3 gallon oversize fuel tank; MX Bonz fuel line kit; rev box; Answer Roost Boost; Pro Design kill switch; mild porting done to motor; Lonestar bearing carrier; D.I.D. ERT gold series chain and 14/38 sprockets; 1989 250R a-arms; 400EX tie rods; Works dual rate resi shocks; PRM Desert bumper; AC grab bar; Cycra Probend handguards; O'Neal polished mini 80 handlebars; MSR Raptor EZpull clutch lever; AC swingarm skidplate, full chassis skidplate, and nerfs; Pep steering stabilizer; Banshee headlights with trick custom-made brackets; trick flaming skull billet by Scream-N Products; Holeshots all the way around.... 1987 250X front fenders; the stock rear plastic; hood and gas tank plastic 2002 300EX; custom made flame seat cover..
I think you would love it... A friend of mine who has a 400EX was pleasantly surprised when he tried out my quad. I have ridden his before too and my 300EX has just as much zip as his 400 has...
