250ex rev limiter
#2
Haven't found anything yet, I put 20's on the back of ours and it hits the limiter too quick now. I was thinking of seeing how a 300 or 400 cdi was wired and seeing if there was a way to make one of them work. Just haven't had the time to look yet.

Are you shure it is the rev limiter and not to lean of jeting. Take your air lid off and see if it is worse. If it is go up to a 110 or 115 main. Or put your stock pipe back on and see if that fixes it. Whit Bros is the wrong way to go. We have had so much problems with there products I will not even sell them!!

Don't bother with the 300ex cdi, it is just as bad. Last year I decided to race my son's 300ex in the county fair's ATV race, a buddy lent me some 20" holeshots, it made it slower !! I hit the rev limit before I could make any power, I had to put a 14 tooth front sprocket on to put the gearing back and get it to rev out. One reason Hondas last so long is they don't allow you to rev them enough to wear the engine out !!! We had a Recon before the ex, same motor and drive train as the 250ex, and after modding the air box and rejetting, it ran a lot better, revved quicker, but also hit the rev limiter a lot faster, you had to constantly shift to keep it from hitting and dropping power. I will be doing a rebuild of the 300ex this summer, and the first thing I got was a modified cdi box with the rev limit removed. It didn't make sense to me to bore it out, pipe, filter and jet it just to be restrictied by the stock rev limit. I don't know if the 300 - 400 ex cdi is the same, and can be used on the 250ex, but I am sure you could send it in to be modified, or buy a spare off ebay and have it modified so you have a stock one to go back to.

It is hard wired into the cdi unit, there is no way to bypass, unless you have the knowledge and equipment to open it up, make the mods, and seal it back up. The best thing is to just buy a modified cdi, they are on ebay, or in an ATV mag,lot of ads for that kind of equipment. Otherwise, smaller tires will just kill your power, it accelerates fast, but falls on its face before you can use the power, because of that rediculously low rev limit on Honda quads. My son's 300ex runs fine with 20" Fast Trekkers on the back with a 14 tooth front sprocket, stock is 13.
