When you replace them, use some Loctite.

any good atv repair manual will tell u to tighten bolts, motor mounts etc.. u have to check the bolts on the motor and all over the bike things will eventually loosen up. get the middle type loc tite dont get the highest grade its like putting superglue on your threads and its really hard to remove the bolt down the roade

I'm a fan of blue Loctite. The Loctite brand is kind of spendy, but it's good insurance.

Loctite baby. Also the front seat post cushions by the carb are notorious for popping off when removeing seat.I put a small hole in mine and ran a small cable tie through it and post collar.Put the tie end towards tank so it wont interfere with groove in seat, haven't lost the cushion yet.

Oh yea, everybody I run with who has 400 EXs(8 of us)has lost a hardware store's worth. I think Honda found a way to cut costs and ensure future parts sales.
A little blue locktite will thwart Honda's grand plan. (Depending on how reasonable your dealer's prices are the Honda low strength thread locker is a little cheaper than actual Locktite, and works just as well.)

When I bought my 400 the sales guy told me to pull every bolt that did not have yellow paint on it and re-install it with blue 242 loc-tite. That has worked great for 3 months now.

It means that there is factory thread locker on them. I have removed a few and they are pretty sticky.
