Dan, 4x4's basically only have an advantage in mud, hillclimbs, pulling, snow, and other slick conditions. There are also other terrains they are better at, but those in general. Basically, 2 wheel drives get the job done, most of the time, but with some amount of difficulty at times. When you need 4wd, you usually need it bad!

One other thing 4WD is good for. Peace of mind. With a 2WD quad you may sit & think "should I try that or not?" With a 4WD you don't think, you just do it !

Dan,
seems like youve got it narrowed down pretty good. You would probably be happy with either choice. Since youvd ridden a Banshee, how did you like the manual shift? Did it come easy to you? If so, you would love the 400ex. But then again, that Scr500 hauls *** too! Either way, welcome to ATVing and enjoy whatever you end up buying.

Sounds like you have done your homework outside of this site...
If it is down to the 400EX and the 500 Scrambler you are in the exact same place that a friend of mine was in two weeks ago.
He is going down to the Honda dealer on Saturday to pick up his brand new 400EX. He gave it much thought and consideration, as have you. What finally made up his mind was, there are 3 other 400EX's in the group along with a 300EX. (I had a 300EX (my first quad) for 2 months and traded up for the 400EX, for the up-grade's in every area rite out of the box) I guess my point is that you should look at what other's ride in the group of people that you will be riding with.
My second point is I have only seen a 4x4 not be able to go where a 400EX can go, but have never seen a 400EX not be able to go where a 4x4 has gone... I don't/haven't ridden in the swamps so don't bash that statement. I know there are a few places that a 4x4 would go better that a 2x4...
I guess what I am trying to say is that if there are 2 wheel drive quads riding where you will be riding, save the weight and get the 400EX, you will not miss the reverse or the 4x4 and you will wish you didn't have it when you have to pull about 150-200 extra pounds out of the hole that you got it stuck in...

Not to throw a monkey wrench into your selection process but you might consider a new warrior. It would be a great for a new rider. I have a 2000 model and it is great. Good power, (not quite as much as the 400ex) reverse, and under $5,000 bucks! I mainly ride on wooded trails and it does a great job.

The 400ex is also a great machine for the extra money. Let us know what you get!

THE 400EX IS BY FAR THE BEST QUAD. IT IS AN ALL AROUND BIKE. THEW BANSHEE IS ONLY GOOD FOR DARAG RACING. GET A 400EX OR A 250R.
