The ES models come with a shifter you can use in an emergency. You put the transmission in a gear and leave it.

Right, with the emergency/backup shifter, which comes with the ATV and is stored in the rear tool box, you put the transmission in a gear of your choice. You don't use it to shift between gears once you get going. It is not much of a problem only having one gear to get home....the Foreman has so much torque at low RPMs you can easily start in third.

As for the ES shifting with the thumb... no problem at all. I like it a lot better than foot shifting. For one thing you get full floorboards with the ES. For another, the Foreman has a lot of torque. Think tractor motor. I usually short shift (put it in a tall gear) and let the engine torque power me around. There is no need to spin this motor to get power. The power starts at idle. (I find it amusing for other (non Honda) riders to talk about their engine developing power up to 8,000 RPM. Why would anybody want to spin an ATV engine at 8,000 RPM ???) Also, you can place your feet anywhere in the floorboards without worrying about hitting the shift lever. etc, etc, etc, In short I really like the ES system.

yes you can put a foot shifter on a ES, But you have to remove the engine and change out the shaft that the shifter goes on and a couple of gskts. I have worked on alot of 450's what wrong with yours that it doesn't work or you just want to shift with your foot.
