Default 86/87 vs 88/89 250r engines

I am thinking about selling my banshee and buying a 250r. I have heard that the 88/89 swingarms and a-arms are different/better and that the 88/89 engine specs are different as well. Are the 88/89 engines stronger/faster? I would change the swingarm and a-arms anyway, so this is not a factor in my decision, but if the 88/89 engines are better, then I would only look for these two years.

Thanks!

The 86 is actually the fastest year, it had a quick reving short rod motor and a lower 5th and 6th gear ratio.
