400ex wheelie
#12
One tip I learned when I was young, was to always keep your foot on the rear brake when doing a wheelie. It will stop you from going all the way back, but if do go all the way, you just hit the grab bar. If you hit the grab bar, don't worry, just hold on. I usually start in second, get the bike in the powerband, hit the throttle, pull on bars, shift my butt back, find the balance point and use the throttle to stay there.

Start on level ground....if you tip it back too far on uneven ground and you don't get it down in time it can tip over sideways. Trust me on this one.
Practice in 1st gear for a while so when you overcook one,you are not going too fast.
You need to get over the fear of tipping back to far.
I looked at my grab bar and thought "Thats too short to hold the quad up like a tripod if I go back too far."
Then I went back too far and it hit,and I did not even think I was up that far.
Seated or standing works equally well, but I would start off sitting.
Hitting the rear brake will become habit if you go back too far....so no worries there.
If you tip it back on the grab bar and then just hold in the throttle trying to drag it on the bar, then it will usually pitch sideways and toss you...and bend your bars......
Trust me. I have video to prove it....hahaha.
Heres a small mpeg of a second gear wheelie in my yard. I only set it down cuz I ran outta room.
Once you find the balance point, its REALLY simple and you will wonder how there was ever a time when you could not do one.
A 400EX is a GREAT machine to learn this on.

Heres and OLD one of me wrecking cuz I tried to drag it once the grab bar hit. Once I felt the bar hit I went WOT and paid for it.....hahah This was the day I was learning to wheelie. Caution! My friend utters the phrase "Holy Sh*t" Then runs for the quad instead of seeing if I was ok...haha:

wow, thanks alot. you guys have been really helpful. i don't want to seem like i keep asking the same question over and over, but will the front end come up with just throtle? and if so which gears will it do this in? and to add one more question on. whats the best gear to jump in, the jumps i've been taking i've used second and everyonce in a while i use third. thanks in advance.

Depending on where in the powerband you are,the wheels should come up with just throttle at least in 1st and 2nd gears.
Sometimes if I bog second gear I need to yank the bars up.
Try positioning your weight back a little. It should help a bit
I was never fond of the knee on seat approach.
Found it too easy to tip it that way.
And then one time my foot got caught in the grab bar ......and the quad tipped back down...and kept going...and dragged me with my one foot caught in the grab bar for a while.
Wish I had it on tape. It was hilarious.
Jump in whatever gear you feel comfortable in.
Just don't get going too fast and let off as you are going over the jump or it will pitch forward.
Its better to approach it steady and then gas it over the jump.

i can't seem to wheelie my 400ex verry well. i can get the front wheel up in with the just the throtle, and in second if i'm going over a bump. but i can't hold it. i've heard that 400ex's should be easy to wheelie. i just can't seem to get it right, or hold the wheelie for very long. can i get any tips on how to do this better?
See kid your just gonna fall at first but trust me thats what the wheelie bar is for ur gonna fall so start only in second gear then slowly increase hope i helped.

I had a raptor and I didn't like it. Had a lot of problems, and the way they ride are odd.
