Make your 400ex a kickstart FINALLY!!
#1
Hey guys...
I just recently foudn out through a friend of mine that you can replace the stock 400ex side case with one from an XR400 and make your 400ex a kickstart!...FINALLY! I think the only thing you need to do is modify the plastic or chassis a little so you can get a full stroke on the kick through.
Anyone else ever heard of doing this?...I was trying tp picture it without buying a whole new side case, however I have not been successful...guess I'll have to get one from ebay.com and see if this really is true.
Check out this site I built for my friends at John Burr Cycles in Fontana,CA.! We're just about to do a complete update with TONS of new discounted gear from IMS/Roll....stay tuned to the site for the latest! We'll be discounting their stuff at 15% off starting June 1st!

No more battery to replace, no more starter, less weight...all good things. Leave your key on, good for you your not stranded with the kickstart.
macentyre the kicker gear fits into there ? What other parts besides the case are needed ? How much actual weight is saved ?

I just hate batteries....they are never reliable for me....I always wanted a backup kcikstart for my 400ex....I never thought it was possible...I thought I would share my new found knowledge with my fellow 400ex owners incase they wanted to do this also.
I've been waiting for months for this to be available to do.....maybe there are others out there like me reading this post.

KILLER250R....
I'm not sure....haven't tried it yet. I've researched it though and it seems to be seemless getting it in there except for a few mods to the plastic...maybe the chassis so you can get a full kick through...
I'm not sure about all the details yet. I'll be trying it though and let you guys know when I do. THis was something that I was told be another 400ex owner and they seemed legit. I guess we'll see (=
If you guys get a chance...call some of your dealer tech people and ask them..I'll do the same and we'll see what we come up with...I'd really like to know if this will really work or if that guy was full of crap.

One problem you may run into is the kickstart hitting the frame when kicking back...that would be a big problem...you can't move the frame unless you want to give up all it's strength...you would need to get a new kicker shaft machined longer to fit then pressed on the gear....pricey....or you could get a slip-on extension made...either way it wouldnt be right...good luck with this project tho...
I think someone tried this in the past and ended up in failure....

Guys....
I found two photos. One is a 400ex side case closeup and the other is a XR400 side case close up....see for yourselves....it fits.

http://photoalbum.cupfart.com/xr400-...nence/DSC00314 - XR400
Is there anything you guys see that might come in the way? The only thing I can see is that the kickstart seems to be rotating towards the back when kicked...that might be a problem with hitting the back fender on the 400ex...??
Are there any tech guys out there that have any suggestions on this?
