Default TRX 250 4-Trax, Kickstart question

I have an '85 250 FourTrax. Recently the kickstart started "missing" every once in awhile. Finally it got so bad that it was not grabbing at all. I pulled off the right side cover and removed the kickstart assembly. Everything looked fine. The ratchet gear shows some wear, but that is to be expected after this many years. I did re-stretch the ratchet gear spring to make it "bite" better. I re-assembled my baby, and there is no improvement in the kick start. I would appreciate any suggestions. All I can guess, is that the problem is in the gear box somewhere. Before I split the case, I was hoping somebody might have and idea of what the problem may be. Thank you

Does it freewheel going down hill when cold? if so it could be the oneway bearing gone bad.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I can push the kick starter down by hand if that is what you mean. about every third rotation, it tries to grab, but it just doesn't do it. The engine runs fine when I start it with the starter, but over the years, I have learned not to depend on the battery when I am several miles into a swamp. Thanks again for any help.

Their is a oneway bearing behind the centrifugal clutch that will go bad and the kick start will not work it will also let you freewheel while going down a steep hill in first gear especily when cold, another way to check it (not running) is put in first gear then push the bike foward if it pushes easy with no engine holdback it is most likely the oneway bearing, let me know what you find out,

Default TRX 250 4-Trax, Kickstart question

Sorry for not getting back, I had to go out of town this weekend. I will try to push it this afternoon. Thanks for the help. I live in a very flat area, so a steep hill will be hard to find locally. Thanks again, I will let you know.

Default TRX 250 4-Trax, Kickstart question

Sorry about the slight name change, I am on the house computer and didn't remember my password. I tried to push the bike in first gear, and it had plenty of back pressure. Actually, I couldn't even get the wheels to spin. In second, I could barely get the whels to spin. I am open for any other suggestions. Thanks for the help!!
