I have decided to do some modifications to my fairly tame TRX300FW quad and would like some input. This machine is stock, has had moderate use, and is still bullet-proof. Its main use is for hauling supplies to some property on trails with adverse conditions. Conditions range from extremely wet and muddy to rock-crawling.

I have decided to move this machine toward specializing it for these tasks, and I was hoping for some feedback from people that have done such. Gordon, if you are out there, this is right up your alley.

It is an '89 model and I was thinking about having a top-end job done to it anyways, for reliability. Is there anything else that I should do while it is being worked on? Is there a low-end cam that would boost power but not sacrifice reliability? Exhaust systems?

I was thinking about putting in a locker in the front diff. Where can I find one of these and what do they usually run?

A bigfoot tire kit is also being considered. What is a good combination that does not add alot of weight?

I also have a warn winch for this quad, so I am pretty serious about which mods will make this little 300 more capable. A larger quad will just get stuck in the tight trails that this machine traverses through.

If anyone has any personal experience or pertinent information that could help me out, please reply or e-mail me at citabria@cordovanet.com

Kids need not reply. (except for Adam Dowden)

I believe Dirt Wheels did an article on just this subject a year or so ago. I think they put a new cam, piston and sleeve, air filter and pipe.

Larger displacements may require you to machine the cases to allow the larger sleeve.

Just thought this might be a good starting place for you. If you need me to find the article, drop me a line.

You might find that you can spend all the $ you want to increase h.p. but then you will need to turn your attention to the suspension, beefing up the clutch and drive shafts and at some point, it makes more sense to buy a new model like the rancher.

Well, the point of the engine work is to freshen up a ten year old top-end. I was just going to bore it .020" over and put a new piston in it. I checked out prices for port work and new valves and springs and that quickly changed my mind. I'm still considering a mild cam, though.

If I want a quad for anything besides work, I'll get another sport quad. I recently sold my built '89 250R. I'm planning on buying a new Kawasaki KXF250R if they ever decide to come out with one. If nobody releases a two-stroke, I guess I'll probably end up buying the best new high-performance quad that comes out for 2001.
