thats because the deer feels that 1 side is gone and shakes around and bangs on trees until the other comes off.

I also noticed that they would be dropped rather close, around 100yds.

Around here in Mn they start shedding aroun the en of January and some I have seen still had one antler in March. Generally deer will winter in the same location and that is why once you find a nice rack keep looking in the same general area year after year unless he gets shot. This is how some people follow the growth of bucks.

Not all deer shed they horns in jan. in south dakota this year we seen one of the bigger bucks we have on our farm still had his horns in middle to end of march( we have him on film with our game camera in march). But most of them shed in late jan. early Feb. I tend to find more sheds on our ranch in western south dakota where there is more grass then crp and switch grass like aournd eastern south dakota on our farm.

I found 27 sheds this year and sdf7rider is right. Some of the deer kept their antlers untill the end of March! I found all mine in the South East corner of the state. Only 5 matching sets though, a couple of the sheds would have scored 145" to 165" depending on the spread. I found a lot of smaller ones this year. I have a neighbor that could fill a one stall garage to the roof with them, he has a few of them that score over 200" B&C. In my profile I have a couple of pics of deer that I shot in the past.
