Default the smallest rifle you have shot moose or deer with?

Just wondering because it seems like a lot of people think bigger is better and I dont feel that way. My savage 30-06 model 110C is what I use for deer and moose. And I dont use the 180 gr bullet either. usually I use 150 gr or the largest has been 165.

.223 Remington on a deer. It was close range and I felt really confident about the shot or I wouldn't have taken it. Far too easy to would an animal and not be able to retrieve it. In fact several years ago I shot a doe that had multiple wounds from what I assume to be a .22 rimfire. I counted 7 wounds with embedded bullets or fragments and there were 3 more that could have been wounds that were through and through. The infection was really bad and I couldn't use the meat. Probably did the animal a favor by killing it and ending the pain it must have been in.

I've moved to using heavier calibers just so I can anchor the animal quickly and don't have those long tracking sessions. I figure what little meat I may lose from a larger bullet wound I gain with having better quality meat. Especially if you lose the blood trail in the dark and have to retrieve the animal the next morning or many hours later. That kind of thing makes a difference in meat quality I think.

Shot a bull in the nuts with my bb gun when I was a kid. I was in the pasture with him and about 200 yrds to the fence. He almost got me. He did get the bb gun. I dropped it on my way out of the pasture.
