Default guns and ammo

I would love to hunt out west i think it is awesome country. My family hunts mostly in the adirondacks.
I myself go to Canada or Maine every year for a week. Matter of fact bear season just opened today 9/18/04. Also we can use a multitude of firearms and bows for hunting, I use a 45/70 guide gun and also carry a 44 mag pistol. I reload some stuff also. My 45/70 is on at 100 yards and only drops an inch and half at 150 yards using 405 grain flat nose bullet. If you guys have any questions about hunting in NY i will be sure to help you the best i can.

Is that one of the Marlin Guide guns, if so how do you like it ? They look like fun, in a kinda painful way!

If your loading for the 45/70 take a look in the Lyman mold book. They have a 550 grain hollow point gas check mold that produces an excellent bullet for use in nearly all 45/70s. Cast in 50/50 mix of lynotype and pure lead it holds the rifelings well to about 1500 FPS and still expands well.

I enjoy hunting with the old rifles and have a couple of the modern reproductions as well as a number of the originals. Glad to see I'm not the only one that still shoots the old "coal burners".

go- You need one of those huge 45/70 hand guns. Then you'd only need to carry one kind of bullets.

45-70

Thats nice somebody that likes some recoil too. the 45/70 is my favorite gun that I have and yes it is a guide gun. I have also owned the 444 but didnt like the performance. Next investment is the 450 marlin the ultimate bigbore. actually i forgot to mention the 45/70 took a 250 pound black bear today.it was opening day in upstate ny......

I saw 4 bear while riding the other day. Three ran out ahead of me and one to the right of me. There was a mother and at least two babies. I'm not sure if the fourth bear was a male, another baby or another mother bear.

We still have some time before bear season starts here.

For pure, brutal recoil it's hard to beat a Thompson Contender carbine with a 16" bbl in 45/70. Seen long time shooters that wanted no part of a second round.

Congrats on the bear, are you going to smoke the hams? Better than pork to my way of thinking.

yes i am going to smoke some of the meat, tencubed. i think that is the only way to eat bear.besides marinating the meat over night then putting it on the grill. the bear i shot last year wasnt quite as big but it had unbelievable taste. we have alot of bear here, it crazy because we can not bait any animal in ny. i shot the one last year when i was walking to my stand.

a good friend of mine has a thompson contender in 45/70 ,he uses it all over for hunting, he took bison, wild boar, whitetail, mule deer, rams, goats ofcourse some are canned hunts not fair chase hunts, not my way of hunting to be honest.......
