Any body down a whitetail ,yet?

Well boys, shot a doe Saturday night at about quarter til' 6. About a 7-10 yard quartering-to shot almost straight down. I was disappointed to not get a complete pass-through as she ran under my stand, I saw my broadhead sticking out one end and the fletching sticking out the other. Gave her 30 minutes (probably should have waited longer, I know) and took after her. Not very good blood until about 50 yards when I found the end of my arrow with the fletching. Blood gets worse and worse until I lose the trail altogether. We went back a few hours later with friends and flashlights and rediscovered more, weak blood. Eventually lost this trail for good and never got my doe. I'm now on a quest for a pass-through. I shoot XX75 Camo Hunter Easton Aluminums. My draw weight is somewhere in the lower 50's I think. My broadheads are traditional 2-blades. If I switch to a 3 or 4 blade broadhead, such as the NAP Crossfire, would I experience better blood trails or possibly even better penetration? Also, I've been hearing a lot of gossip lately about these Crimson Talon broadheads that are supposed to have "extreme accuracy for a fixed-blade and awesome penetration." Is any of this hype true? If I switched straight to a carbon arrow with the same broadheads and same draw weight/length, would this give better penetration? Any help on any of these questions would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to lose another deer. And yes, I'm going to wait longer after shooting one next time. Thanks!

The hardest thing about bowhunting is waiting for the right shot. I've shot many of deer and either not recover them, or track them forever. I used to be real bad for that, now I wait and have had great success. I shoot carbon arrows, 100 grn tips, with either a fixed blade muzzy, or a open on impact blade called by rocky mountain. The littlest one they have. The Muzzy fly great to about 30 yards any farther I like the other open on impact. My bow is set at 70# draw weight with 75% let off. The trick to a good pass threw is to have a broad side shot in the lungs or heart for a clean kill. Your bow will shoot an arrow at enough speed and enough impact at close range to pass threw. Although I think I would consider a different broadhead. A two 3-4 blade would give much better penetration and make more of a hole for blood loss. Actually, you will get more speed from a carbon arrow, but generaly they are lighter. The aluminum arrows will fly slower. I noticed a difference when I switched from alluminums to carbons. I feel I get better penetration and a faster arrow. You can watch the aluminum arrows drop, when shooting at 30 yards and more. Not with the carons. I had to move my pins up a few notches to correct it. All in all I have passed-threw with my old set up that is similar to yours. The main thing like I said is the shot placement. Good luck!!

I have always had great results with Muzzy type broadheads, the trocar, or pyramid tip is a bone smashing chisel that will bust ribs and shoulder bone with no problem. I shoot about 64 pounds, and have always passed through, sometimes hitting both shoulders. The only time I didn't pass all the way through is a quartering away shot that buried the tip in the breast bone, had to pull it out with a pliers !!! The four blade is a real blood letter, makes mince meat of lung and heart, last year my son double lunged a nice 6 pt. buck, it was thrashing on the ground in 30 seconds. The arrow went all the way through, and went halfway up the shaft in the dirt.

Light weight broadheads and carbon arrows would make more speed and penetration with 50lbs draw weight, but you can't crush bone with them. A 3 or 4 blade opens up more hole, which affects penetration. A razor sharp 2 blade probably gets the best penetration. You will get a great blood trail if you hit the right stuff inside the deer.

Haven't had a chance to get out yet, been working weekends. I should make it this weekend. I fixed my bosses wheeler for him so he owes me a couple of trips to his honey holes. last year he got a 17pt. 186 2/8 from his farm in st. geneiveave and he says there are bigger ones yet. well I hope everyone does good this season.

I went out yesterday morning and saw five doe...they were all withing 20 yards of me...three were small, one was dece, and one was a nice one. I waited for a shot on the big doe but when she was broadside I had two of the smaller doe staring in my direction. I think they saw me and didn't know what the hell I was, but they weren't trusting me so they kept there eyes on me. I did get one draw of my bow but before I could get the sites on the big doe she walked behind a bush so I couldn't get a shot. They eventully walked off and left. I guess when you get gready you come home empty handed! oh well Its still early. And I have tons of deer activity were I hunt.....Good hunting to all!
