That's all right, I've been called much worse so I don't take offense. No, it wasn't because they ruined our hunting spot, it was because they were chasing the deer which is against the law in not only N. Dakota, but many other states. But then you would know this since you know so much about the law. Also, if an animal causes damage, whether directly or indirectly, the owner can be found liable.
So keep your dogs on your property and you won't have any problems.

I have a standing agreement with my neighbors. If they see my dog off of my property and they feel the need to shoot it then they should and I will have no problem with it at all. If it is chasing deer or stock ,on my property or not, then I expect them to. If they can't for some reason call me and I'll shoot it myself.

Once at my uncle's place they were having a terrible time with a large pack of over a dozen feral dogs running all over the neighborhood. Mean as hell. They would chase deer, chase kids waiting for the bus, attack livestock and even "recruit" otherwise docile family pets into their pack. One very cold January morning we were out checking cows and we spotted the whole pack sleeping in a southern facing ravine. We we hightailed it back to the house and rousted the boys out of bed, armed ourselves (actually re-armed I had a .22 and my Unc had a .45-frankly we we were way under gunned) and went back to the ravine. 2 of us stood at the mouth of the ravine and the other 4 on the ridges. We opened up and managed to kill the whole pack. 18 dogs. 2 we recognized from the neighbor's house and one was an old dog who had been at my uncles place for at least a decade but had disappeared a few weeks before.

This is what I am talking about. All this fuss over dogs. My goodness. Yes my 2 sons have a dog(kinda expensive thing if I say so), so dont claim I dont like animals. To call a man an azzhole...............common dude...get a grip.....I agree w/him a 100%. We are going through the same thing now. Out in a deer stand and 5 dogs come through that live 1 mile away. Thats BS. Owner said he will "try" to keep them on his property. Starky, keep up the good posts.

I don't mean to come off sounding like I'm proud of what we did, I like dogs, take a look at my pics, I have some pretty nice ones. But if they were out chasing deer I would shoot them myself. Owners need to take responsibility for their animals or they shouldn't have em.

I am sick and tired of pet owners that let their pets roam around all over the country, they don't give a rat’s *** what their pets do or who they do it too. They let them breed and continue the problem with more and more dogs, and they rely on people like myself and starky to get rid of the "pets" for them. I’m sorry if neutering/spaying your pet might cost 80 bucks or whatever but the owners of pets have a responsibility to keep their pets under control. If a dog come on my land and gets into my garbage more than 3 times then I shoot it, if it tried to eat my two young dogs then I shoot it, if it tries to eat my gopher cat then I shoot it, if it chases my cows or horses then I shoot it, if it growls at me then I shoot it, if it pees on my quad I shoot it (Grr someone peed on my wheels the other day)

I try to find out the owner of the dogs that come around but usually dogs that roam free typically don't have a collar or nametag 9 times out of 10. Then I try to scare off the dogs when they come around for the first few times by yelling at them and throwing rocks and such, depending on what the dog is doing. I even shot a big German Shepard with my shot gun using #8 shot from about 50 yards away, it worked for a day or two but he kept coming back harassing my two pups so the next time I used 3.5 inch buckshot in my 12ga.... it died instantly.

Like Starky said in his post, if I see a dog chasing deer in a meaningful way it's dead. End of Story. Dogs that chase Deer in a meaningful way is just like a dog that eats chickens, you can never get them to stop doing it. By meaningful way I’m talking a sustained chase where they are using their noses and tracking the deer and chasing it for a long ways. More than just barking and running at it for a bluff run but an actual chase and that's easy to determine when you see the deer go running by with it's tongue hanging out about 10 inches and one or more dogs come running by a bit later with noses to the ground and their tongues hanging out too.

I have always had dogs and I never let them run the countryside and I always spayed the females so they don't attract other dogs and make puppies I would have to get rid of later. I now have 2 dogs that wandered onto my property, they were young puppies that my a$$hole neighbor' dog had because he is too cheap to spay his female dog, so it keeps having puppies and now he has all these damm dogs at his house and they are all mixed breed mutts and he tries to pawn them off on people at Wal-Mart and such (pisses me off a$$holes that let their dogs breed and then they just kill the pups or pawn them off on everyone, a$$hole people) but anyway these two pups one male and one female were only a few weeks old and barely able to walk followed the mother dog down (which ate my gopher cat's food) and the two pups go lost in my barn whining and such. I was going to bring them back to my neighbor and chew his *** for making so many dogs but instead I fed them and took care of them thinking that my 5 year old boy really wanted a puppy and I’m of the mind that every young boy needs a dog so we kept them. So basically I'm not a heartless a$$hole dog killer but dammit keep the dogs home and take care of them and don't let them **** off your neighbors and make sure they don't have puppies. 90% of the people who own pets don't ever do anything with them (at least around here from what I noticed) they don't train them, don't spend time with them and they are lucky if they even get fed regulary. I train my dogs to fetch ducks and flush grouse and such and I have collers on them.

Only thing now is I have these two muts, and they are dumb as hell I want so bad to get rid of them and replace them with one good dog but my boy wouldn't understand I don't think. I guess thats what I get for taking in two strays that my a$$hole neighbor is responcible for.

Well I would imagine some areas have more of a problem with dogs than other areas. Urban areas typically have animal control and yards are more prone to have a fence thus keeping the dogs in their yard or on the streets while your fence would keep them on the streets and out of your yard, the fencing keeps them in or out and limits movement so you wouldn't notice, but out here they are free to roam anywhere they want and chase deer.

My area is rural, but not so rural that I don't have neighbors close enough that their dogs won't roam to my house. There is alot of hippys in my area and they breed their dogs and the dogs breed them and they just make lot's of dogs.

Well, this is the update, we are moving to another location. Call the animal control again and they are going to "think of a plan". Not good enough for me. And I don't want to get put in jail for 10 years for shooting an animal. - And no we are not moving just because of the dog, many other factors such as needing a bigger place. This has turned into an interesting thread though

I had a problem with the neighbor's dogs getting into my trash so I tried a trick I had heard about pouring a little ammonia around the base of the trash cans. It guess it worked as the dogs did not mess with them again.

I don't think you will have to worry about it much longer because by the time you decide how to get rid of the dog it will have died of old age. I would have shot it the first day and claimed self defense. LOL
