Im 5'10" 160lb and I shoot the Remington Sendero in the 300 ultra mag short action, recoil is comparible to a 30-06. But it depends on what gun in the 30-06 or the 300 your looking to buy...just my 2cents.

choosetoloose04, you have to also take into consideration a sendero is a very heavy gun that weighs over 8 lbs and has a longer barrel also so the kick is not gonna be near as bad with a sendero as it would with any other gun with an average weight and barrel length

The recoil will be pretty good with that gun. If it was me I would look at a semi. The action allows the gases to escape which will reduce recoil. Bolt action guns are very dependable but recoil is also more severe. Just my 2 cents.

I think quality of the gun is a good thing. Myself I prefer the browning BAR for semi auto rifles. I am comfortable shooting it and it fits me well. By that I mean when you hold the rifle in the shooting position are you stretching to reach the trigger or is your arm bent in this position. You want to be able to reach the trigger without stretching or reaching for it. It should feel comfortable and just right. Kind of hard to explain. Me being short with a short reach I had trouble shooting some rifles. Guns are different sizes from the butt to the trigger. A gunsmith can measure you to match the gun. Ibelieve this is the most important thing when purchasing a gun, shotgun or rifle. Without this hard to get consistent accuracy. Now back to your question about quality. Quality is good, but not necessarily expensive. All the manufactures have expensive options but also have lower priced ones with the same quality. I don't think you necessarily have to buy a Weatherby to have a good hunting rifle. They are the most expensive where I am from. Like I said earlier me preference is a Browning. I have also owned Remingtons and Winchester without problems. One thing to keep in mind though, quality means nothing if you do not maintain it, with cleaning etc. I hope this helps and good luck with your purchase. Oh ya my buddy has 300 win mag in the BAR and seemed you can shoot this thing all day, It has less kick then my 270 browning A bolt which is not a heavy kicking gun by any means

That model gun is fine, but I would not reccomend you getting the 300 WSM. My buddy has one ( a TIEKA) and the recoil is terrible. I shoot a 7mm REM MAG and my gun has way less recoil.
If you're looking for one of the newer WSSM or WSM or Ultra Mag cartridges I would look into the 24 or 25 caliber guns. They are much more practical for what you will be using them for. And by shooting a gun that has less recoil you will become a much better shot. If you keep shooting that 300 you will develp some major trigger flinch.
I would do some more research into the 25WSSM (basically a 25-06) and the 243WSSM. I think the .243 WSSM has some real potential at becoming one of the faster selling guns out there.

good luck
