Self Defense Handgun?
#11
Well, in Alabama we dont really have any critters in the woods a semiauto pistol wouldnt handle, I already have a SW 44mag, a Glock 22 with 15 round cap. So, I take it the best choice would be the Ruger P345 I had considered to start with. It has no safety, DA and decock only, and I like the fact that you dont have to worry with a safety. It holds 8+1 rounds, so i guess it has plenty of cap. Plus, I think the Ruger line a pistols are really good looking( not that it matters when your dealing w/ a bad guy), but I like it.
Back to the Taurus, how do yall think recoil would be if I were to shoot 44 Special ammo in it while it was in the truck, and 44mag ammo while in the woods? I got to thinking that it might be a good choice for that fact.
Keep the post comming, I like to read what everybody has to say about this. Yall have been a big help.

IMO a hand gun is better for home defense because if the person you are aiming at is close enough to you they can grab the end of your rifle and then you would strugle to get it back, I think it is better to have a pistol with a 3-4 inch barell and if they grab that you can still have the leverage in your corner and have a better chance at getting control( a revolver to me is best because less jam and always have the chamber loaded). A rifle to me is better for hunting/ outdoor protection.. just my .02..

I carry a Springfield Armory black stainless 1911 A-1 .45acp. I've never had it jam or fail to fire. The .45 has been time tested since the year 1911. They were designed to knock a human off his feet with one shot so I feel safe carring it.

We can't have the luxury of carring handguns in Canada, so it looks like my 12 guage mossberg with butler creek folding stock will just have to do. folds and fits right into the box on the front of the quad. we will load it interchanging slugs and buck shot.
When I carry for Search and Rescue purposes, I carry my 357 mag. Smith n' Wesson 686 with handloads in speed loaders , And the 12g for bear medicine if the need arises.

Well, the deal is done. I went to the gun shop this weekend and got my pistol. I got a Springfield Armory XD 40 S/W in the 4in service model. I took my time, and had not really planed on buying one so soon, but after I held this gun it was all over. I kinda had my mind set on a P345 Ruger, but had considered a SW, a Taurus, Glock. I saw thier P345's and noticed that they were priced $20 over another gun shop I stop in, so I thought I would just wait. I saw several Glocks, but dad has one and I wanted something different. They didnt have the Taurus I wanted to see. I seriously considered the S/W (Glock clone), but the gun just felt cheep. Then I saw the first XD I had ever seen. I was a OD green black slide, 357sig. Asked to see it and it just felt right. Could be the best feeling pistol I have ever held. Thought to my self this could be the one. I asked if he had it in anything else, and told him keep it under $400. He came back w/ a used XD 40 sw in my price range, and she came home w/ me. The gun was $388, he added a high cap. mag ($30) and two boxes of shells, and called it even at $400. I thought I got a heck of a deal. The gun has barely been used, and is in spottless condition. Shoots very well. I really like the two safteys on the grip and trigger(no clunky manual safety levers to deal with), and the overall feel and balance of the gun. I think I'm going to be really happy w/ it. Thanks for all yalls help, comments, opinions. Yall have been real helpful.
I would like to say the guys at Larry's Pistol and Pawn, Huntsville AL, were very helpful too. If any of yall are close enough to stop in , or have already been there, you wont be dissapointed. They have a huge selection of new and used guns to choose from, and are very reasonable w/ prices.
