Whats up guys? I have had some pretty crappy luck w/ my Ruger 22 going through scopes. Both scopes came off my deer rifles when I got better ones. The first was a Simmons that was on my 270 for about 4 years, then my dad gave me a Leupold to replace it. So, I put it on the 10/22. It was good for a while, maybe a year or so, then the crosshairs turned clockwise in the scope giving the illusion that the scope had turned in the mounts. I figured that it was just a crappy scope, and chunked it. No problem, I always have some extra scopes around. I replaced it with a Niko Sterling scope that came on a Howa package I bought. 3x9x42 and a pretty good scope. It survived about 200 rounds of 300WSM and never missed a lick. 20 rounds of 22Lr, and it does the same thing as the Simmons. Whats up w/ this guys. I love my little Ruger, but I cant afford a scope every 20 rounds, lol.

 

That is odd, I would just stick to the Leupold, you know you won't have a problem then.

 

Semi-auto .22s will eat scopes all day long, the "recoil" is actually in the opposite direction as a normal rifle because of the bolt slamming against the back of the chamber. If you get a scope made for a .22, it's designed to handle the backwards recoil and is probably parallax-free at 50 yards instead of 100 yards.

 

Thats what I figured, I just didnt know for sure. I guess i can either get a scope made for a 22, or get a bolt action 22. Thanx guys.


What 22 scope do yall recomend?

I've never had a problem with any of my 10/22s and scopes. I have 3 10/22's right now, all custom built up...two are LR and one is a Mag. But what I like better, the heavy barrel Remington 597 .22 Mag. It out shoots my Rugers and has no feeding problems. The mags seem to work better also...

 

Hey Dave, I have a 597 Mag also....love it. Got it when they first came out. I just bought a Elite 3200 scope to put on it.

 

I've got 3 scoped 10/22s and have never had a problem with the scopes on any of them. One is a Leupold, one is Simmons and the other is a cheap old 4x Tasco. The cheap Tasco is on the the ammo burner 10/22 that has had umpteen thousand rounds through it with no problems. The others have at least 2000 rounds on each of them. No problems.

Now if you want to destroy a normal scope put it on an air rifle.

 

I think that's what I knew but I remembered it wrong, it's the air rifle that has the backwards recoil. Sorry for any confusion.

 

yep... that was a mistake... a 22 has normal recoil, & I also have several normal 10-22 rifles with the normal scopes, & never had a problem... it is the air rifles that have the reverse recoil, & are rumored to destroy regular rifle scopes...

... as for what / why your scopes seem to be having problems... I'd take a look at the mounting, with the action so short, are the rings up tight against the bells ??? or against the adjusting ring of the eye piece ??? does the bell rest against the barrel, perhaps putting some stress on the tube when the rings are tightened down ??? I don't have a clue as to if that will cause problems, but I know I've put litterally 1,000's of rounds through mine with out a scope failure, so IMO, there is something unusual about your mount or ??? cause the premature failure...
