Good caliber for 12-year old?

Itried the reduced recoil today and it's great. It has the same accuracy at around 150 yrds. With plenty of knockdown. Feels less than half the recoil of the same bullet weight. I recommend.

A .243 is a proven caliber for deer hunting. My grandpa has been using one for more years then I have been alive. Last year my son took his first deer at age 7, with a .223. (in my pics) I was a little hesitant in using this caliber for deer, but it was a last minute decision where I got to barrow a youth model single shot. While my son made an almost perfect free standing shot on his buck, the bullet hit the front shoulder and exploded, blowing up the shoulder and barley penetrating into the lungs. We tracked that deer for a mile and finally got another chance to put him down for good. This year he will be taking a single shot .243 as he is only 8 y/o. Everyone has made good points in their posts and everyone has a different opinon. Being that your son is at an age that in the next few years he will grow up fast, I would look into a regular sized rifle in a 30-06. Then for the first few years use the ammo suggested previously. As he grows into the gun you can change over to the regular loads. Just my 2 cents.

My son has shot my bolt-action 30-06 a couple of times already. This year, however, I plan on getting him to the range to give him quite a bit more practice. My initial fear was that by letting him repeatedly fire the gun at the range he would develop a flinch. I think the managed recoil ammunition will go a long way towards preventing that, and still allowing him to have a gun that he can grow into.

I just realized you are from my old neck of the woods. I am from Wynnewood. I had lots of family around McAlester. How has the hunting been down there?

Thanks for the reply, georged. I was a bit concerned about the recoil of a .270 also.
