Less than a week, elk here I come....

Actually starts a week from tomorrow, but I will be heading up in the mountains a week from today....I'm ready....I don't necessarily like the first part of the season as the elk aren't very vocal, but towards the end of my season, they won't shut up.....such fun hunting them with a bow...

The Elk bowhunt in Utah starts today. I am doing archery for the deer though and that has already started. The elk hunt by far is the fun one though. We drop those in the rifle hunt in Oct.
Nothing better than sitting in the middle of dozens of chirping and bugling elk.

Wow...seems like season starts early in some places. I still have a couple of weeks until we are ready for our early season archery mulies. September in the Kaibab should be awesome...can't wait.

P.S. I know this is off the subject, but me and another fellow got into a debate the other day. I said if I were going elk hunting I could simply shoot a 180grn FailSafe/Accubond in my 300wsm. He said that was not enough gun, and it took him 5 shots out of a 338 Ultramag to put an elk down. I replied that he was a horrible shot, and I could put one good shot in a bull's vitals from my 270 w/ a 150 grn FailSafe, and it would make a clean kill.
What is your opinion on this? What gun/ caliber/ load do you perfer for elk? Obviously you are an accoplished elk hunter, so I would appreciate your experinaced opinon.
Thanx.

No disrespect taken. I just have a friend that hunts solely with a .243 (a little weak for an elk IMO) and has dropped many elk from over 200 yards. So I was just saying that a that a .270 and a 300 easily could. He is just darn sure of where the bullet is going to hit. I myself take a 300 winchester mag for the big boys with hornady interbond bullets.
