you don't have the in alabama yet? I know they put them in other states close to there....i know someone that drew the once-in-a-lifetime hunt for elk in Michigan....I think they are in Wisconsin now also....of course there are a boatload of them here....

Nah, no elk here. Nor do I see them ever being here. The fish and game dept. will fine you $5000 a head for bringing deer in the state. I guess if I'm going to get me an elk, I'll have to come see you in NM.

P.S. I know this is off the subject, but me and another fellow got into a debate the other day. I said if I were going elk hunting I could simply shoot a 180grn FailSafe/Accubond in my 300wsm. He said that was not enough gun, and it took him 5 shots out of a 338 Ultramag to put an elk down. I replied that he was a horrible shot, and I could put one good shot in a bull's vitals from my 270 w/ a 150 grn FailSafe, and it would make a clean kill.

What is your opinion on this? What gun/ caliber/ load do you perfer for elk? Obviously you are an accoplished elk hunter, so I would appreciate your experinaced opinon.

I like to stick to the saying 'bigger is better', but you are right on your friend, if he had to shoot 5 times to put it down, he didn't have really good shots...

Elk are surprisingly tough, you can put one through both lungs and they can go a couple of hundred yards....one lung and they will go for hours....

I like to shoot anything .300 and up....a .300 WSM is a good gun with a 180 grain bonded, partition, etc....even the ballistic tip works well, as it is a big game bullet and not the one that you shoot coyotes with...
