Deer on the trails
#1
I was just out riding and I saw a deer about 20 ft away run right across me. It was a fair size.
I was wondering do any of you guys have those deer whistles on your quads that are really for cars and trucks, I guess the deer are scared of the whistling noise. I think I should get those and put them on my quad because I don't want to hit or get hit by a 400lb.+ deer. And I ride 100% of the time in or beside forests.

I often see deer up close and personnal when on my 'Cat. They don't seem to be in the least bit scared of an atv, though I don't think they recognize it as a threat, and can't differentiate it being a human rider-if wearing a helmet, and consequently usually won't run off.
On two occassions now, I've had deer jump out on the trail, or logging road I was riding, and narrowlly escaped hitting them. One, I missed by about 3 feet, which was almost too close for comfort, but the second, I missed her by mere inches! I believe, if you look close enough, you could probably find tail hair on my front box! That one scared the hell out of me, as I thought for sure I'd have a big doe sitting in my lap, wounded for sure, and possibly a damaged 'Cat as well. Thank god the breaks worked good, otherwise who knows what would have happened.
As for the deer whistles, do they actually work? I always figured they were just another gimick. My mom ran out and bought a set for her car, and about two weeks after my dad put them on, they hit a deer. They didn't kill it with their car, but the truck coming from the other direction, well, lets just say it had a new hood ornament.
If they do work, I don't know how well they would hold up to the abuse from off-roading. I would think with all the mud and water, they'd just fall off. Though, I think they are less than $5.00, so hey, it's worth a shot!
Good luck in your quest,
Mike
Hey, any luck with the AC 400 yet???

I'm not sure they will work or hold up to abuse either...anyone else know about those deer whistles???
No luck yet...I can't find a used AC 400 around. I've checked recreational mags but nothing.
I may have to buy brand new if I want a 400 or find a 300 instead but bigger is better!!

Hey...so if I git one of dem thar deer whistles, an I blow it reel hard, will them deers come running to me an I kin shoot 'em?
Or are the whistles mounted on the front end of a vehicle, activated by forced air which create a warning meant to scare deer before they commit vehicular suicide? Deer calls, rattle bags and lures I've heard of. I've never heard of deer whistles on Florida cars.

I see alot of cars having the whistles, they are there so when a car is coming up to a deer on the side of the road the whistle acts like a warning to move away or it scares them so they run off.
They aren't a deer calling whistle.

The regular whistles need you to go over 30 to work. I have some on my pickup & read the directions. They also won't work if plugged with mud. They have some new ones that are electric, kind of like a little buzzer you can have on anytime the switch is on. I saw them somewhere but can't remember where. Champion Auto, maybe? Just a guess.

My opinion is they do not work. When I'm hunting and I need the deer to stop, I whistle. The deer stops in it's tracks. Hopefully dead in it's tracks! I think most times if a deer hears something that it's unsure of, it will freeze. You just have to hope it doesn't freeze in the path of your ride.

At least it is easir to miss a still deer. I have a friend who has been hit by 3 deer on his dirt bike. They all tried to cross the trail/road in front of him. He bumped one with his front tire, and 2 of them came crashing through the trees and sidewiped him. One from each side. He was lucky, the buck (other 2 doe) just missed his leg with the antlers and put a nice dent in his steel gas tank. This isn't typical, though. His nickname is 'crazy'.
