I agree with the other guys an 30-06 would do just fine, propper choice in bullet and propper placement of that bullet are key!!!!!

I have a 338 win mag with a moose and a bear in it sights in the future! Had it for 4 years now, and havent hunted anything big enough to use it yet

You know what it's like up there??But like I said, I didn't know how Maine does things, so I'd like to find out. They're really expensive though, so I doubt I'd be able to go when I'd like, but at some point in the near future hopefully. That's one of two hunts I want to go on before I die. A moose and a muley hunt.
I'd drop the muley and moose in favor of one elk hunt. An aunt drew out on moose in Wyoming, a 50-yard, non-moving shot. Antelope, deer and elk are far superior eating. Mule deer are very common and easy to take in the Western US. Elk are challenging.

Ok, so my M-44 would be fine then?? I got these cartrages from Russia, don't ask me what they are, they're blank on the bottom and I threw away the packaging, but when I shot my deer, it blew a four inch hole in the side. So, where would be the best place to go then?? Aight, gotta go here, Christmas program tonight!! Wish me luck!!

I'd buy new ammo.

It left a normal size hole in the hide, but it was a soft tip so it expanded inside and left a hole in the rib cage. So the bullets are alright.... unless you meant something different??

I would get different ammo. The Russian stuff I have seen is too unpredictable. Some expands and some doesn't.

The one guy I know who hunts deer with a Dragunov SVD handloads but before he made up his own loads he swore by the "Norma" brand rounds. Always good, accurate reliable rounds that expanded and worked well.

Here is a place you can get them mail order:

The Russian stuff should be fine for blasting away with or even whacking a doe or two with for the sake of economy and curiosity but for your big hunt I'd invest in some higher quality ammo like the Norma. It would be a shame to wreck your expensive hunt because you cheaped out on 20 or 30 bucks worth of ammo.

You didnt say where you planned on going for your hunt, or if you did I missed it when reading the threads. If you are planning to hunt in Canada then your process will start NEXT summer. Here in Canada they use a draw system or tags, just buying a licence will allow you to shoot a calf, you must enter the draw to have a chance at getting a bull or cow tag. If you wait until 07 to enter the draw your chances of drawing a tag are essentially 'O". To increase your chances of drawing, albiet its still no guarantee, you want to enter in 06 as well. The way the system is set up you have a greater chance of drawing in your second year of applying, or third if you arent successful in the 2nd year. Being from the US your licence will have an added 'non resident' cost to it but its not so much to discourage you. One thing to keep in mind though is there may be border issues with trying to get meat ( your moose) back into the US. Not sure if its been cleared up since the BSE crisis here but at one point it wasnt possible to bring moose across the US border from Canada. ( the whole mad cow scare caused alot of stupid rules to be inacted... case in point at one point US customs here was seizing roast beef sammichs , and steaks,BIG MAC's DOuble whoppers !!! and etc from people crossing the border ) You may want to look into the meat issue before even look farther into a Canadian hunt. Keep in mind that rules ,as far as tags, may be different if you have a guided hunt ( guides are allocated tags) and that your US dollar will go farther here in Canada because of the exchange. Depending on the area you may want to hunt, check the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources website for data, your chances of bagging bullwinkle are fairly good.
