Pros & cons of towing a finish mower?
#1
My old John Deere riding mower has had it. (13 years of service aint bad). I have a new Suzuki Eiger 400 4x4 manual I bought this past fall. I'm debating buying another JD rider or a pull behind finish cut. I mow about 1 1/2 acres & about 1/3 of that is slopes.
I used the riding mower on the slopes by just shifting my weight to up hill side & never had any problems slipping or sliding with good tires.
Seems like you would not be able to turn as well & that constantly looking back at mower would give a man the stiff neck. Also I want this lawn to look good & not uneven. I've heard it is hard to keep pull behind slow enough to make a nice even cut.
Would you buy rider on a pull behind? If you use a pull behind finsih mower, would you buy another?
Any pros cons on the tow mowers would be appreciated.
Thanks,
HS

I had JD STX38 and added a pull behind offset so I would have 82 inches of moving for the cabin. It was alot quicker that way but it didn't look like it was a manicured lawn. My JD took a crap on me so I just used the moxing deck behind my wheeler for 2 months. Make sure you use low gear if you do use a pull behind however my suggestion is to get a good size rider if you want a nice looking yard. The cornering sucked and you would miss some with the pull behind.

A pull behind would be better for larger tracts of ground. It's nice for pasture areas, fields, etc. You do have to worry about tearing up your lawn when you make sharp turns (even when turning gently) since you do not have an unlocker on your rear diff...

I think I've decided to just buy another John Deere or Cub cadet rider. I have to turn & manuever too much for a pull behind. I know all to well about turning sharply in the lawn with the ATV. The wife gets kinda upset when I chew up her nice grass

You might want to take a look at the new "Zero Turn" mowers. Guy down the street in Seattle has one and he does no trimming with a push mower anymore. Swisher and others make them.
