Default .22 Caliber Rifles

Read more of the thread and have this to add:

I hunt with a .243 Winchester Model 70 and it is absolutely death on whitetails from tree to 300 yards (my own personal limitations prevent longer shots). My younger brother hunted with a .243 Rem 700 Varmint barrel for years and killed so many whitetail we both quite counting. It is great for fox, coyote, and crows as well. However, I picked up a 22-250 in the TC Encore and have found it to be very accurate and also very deadly on deer.

Before anyone starts in on me. It is legal in NC to hunt with both of these setups. I punch a lot of paper at the benchrest before I ever go hunting with a rifle. My personal favorite caliber is the Winchester .308, but I like playing with flatter shooting rifles. These two are good ones for youth and women also.

My 2 cents

10/22 for the semi auto. Hands down the best choice.

CZ if you want a bolt gun. I have one that I got rid of a remington for and it is by far the most accurate .22 rifle I've ever owned. (and I've owned a bunch! haha.)

I have a 9422M in 22WMR, too. Love it, though I'm almost afraid to take it out what with prices being what they are these days. Mine is the Yellowboy edition, got it back when they were cheap.

22WMR is perfect for a small levergun. Hard hitting and fairly accurate to 100 yards. Good for game that might be marginal with 22LR, but not so large that high velocity centerfire is necessary. Coyote, groundhog, etc...

In the original post you said you were looking to buy 1 or 2 rifles.... Well I now see you have already made your purchase.

Well i have the solution for anyone looking for 2 great guns...

For LESS THAN $400 you can buy both of these brand new

#1 You must buy a classic Ruger 10/22 semi auto

</a>

#2 For a bolt action the marlin .22 mag

I have both of these rifles and then are 2 of my personal favorites. The .22mag is probably one of the best camp guns you could have IMO

I hear some new 22mag ammo(Hornady and CCI V-max rounds) have made the 17hmr obsolete. Anybody else hear this?

I have shot both of these rounds and must say that they look to be real performers. I have to get another scope for my .22 mag, hopefully soon as i want to put these round to the test on some critters...

anyone have a good suggestion for a scope?

hey i never said to shoot a sign I asked if he had or similar material.and shooters in general make a bad name for themselves by not being careful. and i like how u quote hitler there, U must not see how america is doing same thing. every gun has someones name on it regardless of who owns now. and point of fact is he asked your opinion about a 22 caliber round. a 22 is a ok weapon for plinking cans at distances of 100 yrds tops the length has nothing to do with it cause if a bullet is spun more then it's made for it will tumble. and i agree with your fact about tossing gun around and it still being good shooter, even though u had to resight scope everytime u shoot. thats nature of scopes. a 22 has a 7 inch drop after 100 yrds and i like longer range shots and have made 22 rounds hit targets at distances of 300 yrds or more but u could have thrown bullet and had same impact power on target and u will never have a good group with a 22 theres no shot group that u could ever make twice with a 22. and that comes from how they are manufactered. in bulk. so in my opinion a 22 is fun and can be challenging but the latter is because of all the variables that come from a cheap round. I'm sorry to be so matter of fact about this but i have more trigger time then u would believe. and my weapon of choice is my A3 in a .223 caliber. but tencubed must long for the good ole days cause hes quoting them now.</end quote></div>

I won't be surprised if this doesn't get answered since it an old post, but WTH? if a bullet is spun more then it's made for it will tumble How do you spin a bullet more than it's made for? The rate of the rifling twist determines how fast the bullet spins and it doesn't matter what the length is. A 1:16" twist will make the the bullet spin one full revolution in 16", 1.25 times in 20", and 1.5 times in 24". It's still the same exact amount of spin. A bullet that's spun TOO SLOW to be gyroscopically stabilized will tumble. That would happen if you shot a super long and heavy bullet in a slow twist barrel.

I have a Ruger 10/22 that I got back in the '70s and it still works great but doesn't mave match-grade accuracy. But the .22 LR is probably still the most accurate caliber made as long as you limit the range to what it's made for. Most .22 bullets can go 1.5 - 2 miles but you can't hit what you want to at that distance. At a normal shooting distance they're so accurate that target shooters all over the world use them.
