Here in Missouri the season has been strange. They started out early, then we got a couple cold spells and they have been spotty ever since. My son got about 40 out of his back yard the first part of April. We found only a few when we rode down at Suttons Bluff 3 weeks ago. They said the same thing was going on down there.

They seem to be very scattered. I had to cover a good 20 or 30 acres of timber on my farm to get a decent sized sack full. I'm finding one here and another one there but no great big patches of them like I normally do nor are they in their usual spots. The cold snaps really played havoc with them the last two years.

One good thing is that the ones I am finding are quite nice and running 4 to 6 inches tall. Don't have to mess with a bunch of little ones.

Here is a picture of what they look like. They are very good tasting mushrooms when cooked. You cant eat them raw. I haven't found any in a few weeks, so I guess they are done here.

Was out this weekend after the mad rush of flatlanders were up here terrrorizing the locals lookin for them. I only found about 15 black ones, no greys or yellows yet this year. Might of all been picked in the area i was looking.
