ATVs are popular with the farmers in our are of centeal Illinois. Some use the SMV signs and some don't. I my self have a milk crate with a SMV attached to the back that is secured to my rear rack. From my expirence if you act like you have a reason to run your atv on the roads you never have a problem. I use mine to spray weed killer, pull trailers or tow it behind machinery. I would think that a fella from the city on a sport quad just out for a joy ride might not be granted as much fredom. I know that kids on the road don't have a chance when spotted by the law. I have asked if the SMV sign makes you legal and the answer around here is no.

You need to check your local and state laws. If there are specific laws against riding ATV's on public roads, then nothing you do will make it legal. A SMV sign may gain you some leeway with the local law though, as long you're justified in being on the road.
