go to barretfirearms.com also check out the fifty caliber shooting association's web page fcsa.com. do you plan to get the semi-auto (m82), bolt action repeater (m95), or the single shot bolt action (m99)?? you made an excellent choice i have heard that barrett makes the absolute best 50 available. there are others but when you are shooting a high pressure round like the 50, the others don't hold up as well. recoil is manageable and by no means severe unless you remove the muzzlebrake. reloading is suggested b/c at 3.50-6.00 per round shooting the big 50 can get expensive however if you can drop $6500 on the m82 you can also buy plenty of ammo. realize that the 50 develops 25,000 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle with a 750 gr bullet compared to just 8000 ft lbs with the .460 weatherby, so have a firm backstop. the 50 can penetrate 3" "bulletproof" glass and knock holes in 1" steel with little problem. accuracy is good out to more than a mile (with proper optics and shooter skill) i saw a picture of a prairie dog shot with a 50 at 1762 yards. only one thing describes the m82 upon firing...it's like the wrath of god being unleashed.

you can also get semi auto versions of the m2 .50 cal. machine gun for approx. $7000.

get one and you will have the biggest gun in deer camp.

and no i don't have one yet. i just read a lot and listen to people that have them.

hey,

if you want more info on 50 caliber rifles that you can buy without selling an organ, check out the december 2001 issue of guns and ammo. they profile four very affordable 50's: the barrett m99, armalite ar50, the state arms rebel, and the serbu bfg-50. they range in price from $3100, $2615, $2250, and $1975, respectively. the article only covers the single shot action rifles. i know i may have jumped to conclusions by saying that the others wouldn't hold up as well as the barrett but as the article explains, all the tested guns are very high quality and very high strength...my error, sorry. if you get one tell me and if possible shoot it at night and take a picture of the fireball and send it to me.

I live and hunt in Alaska. I shoot a 375ultra mag (404 jeffries necked down to a 30 caliber) and this is enough gun to bring down any animal you can find on the North American continent. And they do grow them extra large here. A cheap box of shells which is Remington cost me 59.99 I use them for target practice. I have to special order my XLC Barnes 270 grain from South Dakota at over 100.00/box from Superior Ammo. I shot 2 Brown Bears, one was at 325 yds and the other was 475 yds neither one took more than 2 hits to put down. What the hell do you plan on shooting with a 50 caliber? Airplanes?? I would feel comfortable shooting my 375 out to 500 yds. I shot a Caribou at 200 yds with it and and over half the animal was wasted. That is the last time I make that mistake. Shooting that small of animal with that gun. Caribou are by no means a small animal either ranging from 200lbs up to 500lbs. The gun your looking at cost around 6000+ the Rem Ultra Mag, which there are 3, 7mm ultra, 300 ultra, and 375 ultra, all run in the ball park of 600-800, varies by dealer. I am a guide in AK for fishing and hunting so I don't know what you would use a 50 for. Some people do like bigger calibers like the 416 or the 460 Weatherby and there your still looking at 2000+ with nice optics on top of it. Here where i live we get over 300" of precipitation, rain and snow per year. I have to shoot brushed aluminum or stainless steel with synthetic stock because of the precipitation. Unless your totally loaded, I don't understand what you would want such a large caliber for unless your going to shoot at airplanes. I would stick with the 30 caliber or 40 caliber and even that is stretching it a bit.
